Editorial: Convict and remove President Trump — and disqualify him from ever holding office again
latimes.com ^ | January 31, 2020 | THE TIMES EDITORIAL BOARD

Not because Trump is a Republican. Not because of his conservative policies. Not as a way to nullify the outcome of the 2016 election. But because he engaged in high crimes and misdemeanors of exactly the sort the founders had in mind when they created the impeachment process in the U.S. Constitution.

The details of those crimes have been laid out a thousand times, but here they are again: Congress voted to give $391 million to Ukraine, an ally that was at war, defending itself against Russia. But Trump withheld that money in a clear violation — an illegal violation — of Congress’ express wishes. He did so not because he had foreign policy disagreements with Congress, but because he hoped to extort from Ukraine’s president what he called “a favor” in return for the money — the announcement of an investigation into groundless accusations against former Vice President Joe Biden that he believed could be useful to him in winning reelection.

In other words, he hijacked national security and foreign policy to induce Ukraine to take actions to smear a prospective political opponent. He abused the power of his office to benefit himself personally. Then, as the second article of impeachment makes clear, he sought to stonewall the investigation by refusing to release documents and ordering his subordinates not to testify in the House inquiry.

It may not come as a surprise to many readers that we support the ultimate punishment for this egregious abuse of power.

So any make-believe “Ukraine deal” even if true, would be a HC & M?

Laughable. How about sending troops off to undeclared wars? How about secret deals with our enemies (Iran) and billions of $$$?

How about JFK and Bay of Pigs? Stealing elections, him and LBJ? How about “reverse discrimination” programs, esp by Clinton and Obama? Cabinets that discriminatorily “look like America”?

How about appointing SC candidates based on their ethnicity, religion, etc rather than merit?

Strange how the democrats forgot to include high crimes and misdemeanors (actual crimes)in their articles of impeachment.

I guess they just forgot ...

I love this ally stuff....like if we get invaded, the Ukraine or Germany or France or etc etc is going to come to our aid?

Most of the countries we've helped would kick us if we were down. It's time to STOP giving ANY of them money - then you'll see the 'wealth' in DC's deep state dry up.

The deep state gets their wealth from selling influence. Anyone think even ONE country in the world would pay Hillary $10,000 a minute for a forty minute speech IF they thought she wouldn't trade the blood of our young OR the cash of our citizens to them?

It’s a stupid accusation. The president is SUPPOSED to control the release of aid. It’s happened time and again through US history.

He released it ahead of schedule.

But, he held back temporarily due to dead beat Europeans and because of a very real appearance of corruption.

There is no crime here.

Don’t know about ally, but when Ukraine turned over their nukes to us after the breakup of the USSR, we did commit to help defend them. That said, no one seems to mind that when Ukraine was being invaded during the Obama administration, he sent no military aid but rather a sternly-worded note to Putin to “cut it out!”. Trump did send military equipment, but somehow he’s the one who left Ukraine defenseless.

At the Newport Beach flea market they were pushing this rag. I told them to go piss off. They couldn’t understand my dislike. This editorial is a good example.

The Democrats who are claiming that Trump should be removed from office for slightly delaying aid to Ukraine voted against giving that aid to Ukraine.

Since when is Ukraine an ally? They don't belong to NATO. Do we have any formal treaty or agreement with them to make it legitimate to call them an ally? Otherwise it's just a Democrat talking point.

No of course not. That’s why there are hints of impeaching Pence as well. Not to say that they want to interfere in the 2020 election as well by striking Trump’s name from the ballot.

lol

US foreign policy is whatever the President says it is

To suggest that the President can act contrary to US policy makes ZERO sense

“...into groundless accusations against former Vice President Joe Biden...”

The LA Times thinks everyone else is dumb. That’s the only way to describe folks who say it’s “groundless”.
