CLEVES, Ohio (CBS Local) An entire school district in Ohio was shut down for two days this week after nearly 600 students called in sick, the districts superintendent said.
All classes and after school activities at Three Rivers Local School District in Cleves were cancelled for Thursday, Jan. 30 and Friday, Jan. 31. because of a major flu outbreak.
Superintendent Craig Hockenberry said out of nearly 2,400 people who attend or work at three schools on campus, about 600 students and as many as 50 staff members are out sick.
Many of the students have the same symptoms, such as high fever, vomiting and body aches, he told CBS affiliate WKRC.
Although our goal is to protect as much instructional time as possible, we also need to do everything we can to ensure our students and staff are healthy and in the best environment to foster learning, the district wrote on its website.
No staff, students or visitors will be allowed on campus with the exception of the custodial staff, officials said.
The closure will allow the custodial staff adequate time to completely disinfect and sanitize the campus.
Hockenberry plans to reopen the district on Feb. 3.
Its about a four-day incubation period, so thatll give us Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday to do some extra cleaning, sanitation, to get ready for Monday, he said. Hopefully, well get healthy again.
you think
That’s a pretty nasty flu breakout.
“No mention of the coronavirus, however, 600 people calling in at once seems like there might be a few kids taking advantage of the situation.”
Yep, I could see a couple of generations of our gene/DNA pool doing that get out of classes.
Public schools are a 19th century paradigm that outlived its usefulness in the early 21st century. It’s primary functions today are a jobs program and free daycare for parents that have sold themselves into indentured slavery.
Home schooling is the answer.
This being an almost all-white town, I suspect there’s a virulent bug circulating. No way the parents go along with their kids playing hooky. Then again, maybe there’s a bit of coronavirus worry going on.
Amen to that.
Agreed on the public schools—the day they end is the day real education begins...
Sounds like a stunt I might organize. Real easy...
agree wholeheartedly.
Things that makae you go, “Hmmmm . . .” Students and staff taking advantage of the coronavirus scare or are they actually sick? I think it is the latter.
I recall a week in jr high where there were so few students that the absence report was reversed to list those present, and as many as 6 classes were combined as there weren’t enough teachers.
They probably aren’t missing anything.
Hamilton County Schools in SE Tennessee had 24% of their students out sick and they wouldn’t suspend classes.
Sounds like Norwalk.
If so, I think I’d rather have Bat Scratch Fever.
Centerville, Ohio City Schools are closed due to illness.
(8,200 students 2018-2019)
Are you kidding...My grandson goes to XXXXXXXXX in NYS. Said 75% of his class are Asian. My daughter told him to stay home if he thought it would be best. They’re not stupid. It’s not hooky...It’s thinking what might be best.
I remember when the 1971 Sylmar earthquake struck, a bunch of us cut school.
The parents are at work. They don't know what their high school age kids are doing.
I wonder how many of the absentees made it to the mall or friends house?
