People should cut the amount of beef, lamb and dairy produce they eat by a fifth to combat climate change, a report says.
It says public bodies should lead the way by offering plant-based options with all meals.
But it says if people dont cut consumption willingly, taxes on meat and dairy might be needed.
The report comes from the governments official advisers, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC).
Its chief executive Chris Stark told BBC News: We can't meet the government's 2050 Net Zero target without major changes in the way we use the land, the way we farm, and what we eat.
The farming union NFU welcomed much of the report, although they oppose cuts in livestock - but some environmentalists believe it's too timid.
The document recommends a host of measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions from the countryside.
Others include increasing UK forestry cover from 13% to at least 17% by 2050, and restoring at least half of upland peat bogs.
But its the proposals for reducing consumption of dairy produce and red meat that are likely to draw attention.
The authors say reducing the amount of beef, lamb and dairy we eat by at least 20%, and reducing food waste by 20% would save the equivalent of seven million tonnes of CO2 from farms.
They say land thats no longer needed for cattle and sheep could support trees crops to burn for energy.

These people view North Korea as a shining example, of what they wish they could impose on all of us.
Sure, I can add a fifth to my steak and taters meal. Gotta have something to wash it down with, after all.
I get my plant intake through meat.
they just admitted taxes are a tool to be used to control human behavior...
Well, okay, I’ve been cutting them by a glass of wine but if I should cut them by a fifth, who am I to argue. Doctor’s orders. Can I get a prescription for that, though? Just in case my wife thinks I’m making this up.
how soon before the CO2 we exhale is taxed?
We had bacon for breakfast yesterday. Bacon wrapped steaks for dinner last night. Sausage for breakfast. And EGGS! and ROLLS made of flour! Gluten, beef, pork, BACON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You forget that the act of making alcoholic beverages requires the fermentation process. That process releases CO2 which we find in beverages like beer, apple cider and champagne. Also, the process of distillation requires energy necessary to bring the fermented mash up to the temperature where the alcohol becomes a gas which is brought back to a liquid (bourbon, etc) through a heat exchanger. You know if they can get us to stop eating meat because of the CO2 hoax, they WILL justify the end to alcohol consumption. They have to indoctrinate our children first to start the process.
We opened a nice bottle of red wine from GRAPE CREEK WINERY FREDERICKSBURG TEXAS last night, to wash down our steaks with! slurp
I LOVED JOHN CANDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Grape Creek is a SMALL winery in our area. They don’t sell to stores, etc. You have to buy it directly from them or be a member and they will ship it to you 3 or 4 times a year. We also love local FLAT CREEK WINERY!!!!!!!!! It is just 10 miles from our house.
No doubt, no meat nor dairy were consumed at Davos, right?
F ‘em all in the eye.
The whole point of this reduction of meat and dairy intake is to REDUCE the demand for products of animal agriculture, which is considered “wasteful” by the climate fascists.
The consumption of animal-sourced proteins is actually one of the better ways to balance our diets. Over-reliance on plant protein leads to a deficit in certain essential amino acids, and as a result, the protein that IS consumed does not go to rebuild healthy nerves, muscles or much of the body’s connective tissue, and is “burned” by the body as an energy source, with excess nitrogen being excreted through the kidneys, leading to early renal failure, and resulting increased body function disturbances, often reflected in illnesses and shortened life span.
Ruminants (cattle, sheep and the like) have the capability to extract protein from any source, like grass and grain, and in their rumen, the bacterial action can generate EVERY amino acid needed to provide a full and balanced array of amino acids from which to construct the proteins required for full function. It has been demonstrated that with a diet of nothing except shredded newsprint and a nitrogenous compound, urea, cattle can convert this in their rumen into those complete amino acids, and also use the shredded newsprint to extract enough energy to totally replace any other form of carbohydrate, and even a full range of lipids (fat), which are modified from the basic carbohydrate molecule.
Of course, certain other minerals have to be made available to the ruminant animal, as trace amounts are necessary to make the vitamin complexes, and to insure the internal function of the skeletal and circulatory systems. But this can be provided with a mineral block, and does not have to be mixed into the daily food intake.
But most of this is unnecessary for grazing animals on good fertile pasture. Grass alone can provide the basic needs of a beef cow, and the difference can be tasted in the meat.
Do you mean an additional fifth?
They will skip the jail time and put our heads on a pike. Totalitarians always do that. And they are indoctrinating our children to elect totalitarians. Bernie will be a trial run and a method to develop a cultural movement toward a totalitarian America controlled by an elite class.
Well now I dont think Ill be doing that.
Today, after a decent hike in the wilds, we will pick up a rib roast and have it cut to size, grill it up and serve it with a Brie appetizer and anything else decadent we can find to add.
KMPWA, lefties! (PW = Pasty White)
Underrated movie.
If we don’t raise great herds of cattle, we’d have less bovine gas and manure available for these guys to spread around and that would put these b/s propagandists out of business.
