More importantly, now that they know about him and his gun, will he get it home?

I thought firearms could be transported/shipped on the airlines.

"second mortgage"

Back in the late 90's, one could buy a 100 rnd belt of 50 BMG from Sportsman Guide for $110 shipped.

*Every fifth round was a tracer.

I was taught by 1sgt Daly to keep your muzzle pointed at the ground when not being aimed at a target. In case of accidental discharge you didn’t have to worry about someone a mile away catching a round. As you drop to the ground you push the stock down and use your arm as a suspension spring to control your fall. You end in up on the ground with the barrel pointed down range and in a good prone position. I also saw the 1sgt place a boot on the back of someone turning around on the range with their barrel pointing up. with 285 pounds of Alabama country boy on your back, you answer the “ What were you doing wrong” question quickly, but trying to conserve the air in your lungs. weapon aimed at ground during transport, raise and aimed at definite target, get good site picture , squeeze trigger evenly, repeat until all targets are not targets anymore, always keep looking around, because most people don’t even see the shooter that hits them. steady rate of fire at around 6 seconds per shot keeps the enemy suppressed when a fire team has 3 shooters engaging continuous with number 4 on overwatch and filling in during reloads by other team members that a bullet in the air every 2 seconds. the targets thing that a lot more than 4 people are engaging them. I had an Aero Scout infantry team member say that his squad of 2 teams plus 1 M60 and him with a grenade launcher could make a north Vietnamese company think an American company was attacking them. it fixed the NVA in place while artillery, air, attack choppers and more air assualt infantry built a big hammer that eliminated most of the NVA. typically when the NVA hit about 1/3 casualties in these engagements, they started to bug out. Most of the time, it wasn’t in the direction of his squad. Sometimes they would then hide , lay low, until most of the NVA had passed and reopen up. He told me the robbery gunfight in the movie HEAT reminded him of how they fought. Anyway, keep the muzzle pointed down. forgive an old guys rambling, And Ernie , the squad leader doesn’t deserve his wife. Brave Americans who did a tough job.

I fired that 50 cal. machine gun over 60 years ago.

Me too but mine was a Quad setup on a halftrack. Barely hear anything anymore. I carried a BAR in Basic Training probably because I was 5'5" and 107 lbs. Drill Sergeant also had me fire a M1 grenade round from the shoulder, carried bruises for a good while over that one.
