FRANKFURT - Soaring demand for SUVs drove record sales for premium carmakers including BMW and Mercedes last year, leaving the industry on collision course with government efforts to tackle global warming despite big investments in electric vehicles.
BMW said on Friday deliveries by its main luxury brand rose 2% to a record 2,168,516 vehicles last year, thanks to a 21% jump in sales of its “X” branded sport-utility vehicles (SUV) which now make up 44% of the BMW brand’s global sales.
At Mercedes-Benz, the world’s best selling premium car brand, every third luxury car sold last year was an SUV.
Automakers across the world are investing billions in electric vehicles to try to meet tougher emissions regulations. But the jury is out on how many drivers will buy them.
“Consumer preferences for SUVs could offset the benefits from electric cars,” the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned in its November World Energy Outlook 2019 report.
SUVs were the second-largest contributor to the increase in global CO2 emissions since 2010 after the power sector - ahead of heavy industry including iron and steel, cement, aluminum, as well as trucks and aviation, it said.
There are now more than 200 million SUVs around the world, up from about 35 million in 2010, accounting for 60% of the increase in the global car fleet since 2010, IEA data shows.

I have absolutely zero problem with replacing how my car operates from combustion to some other method...
When you offer one that gets me at least 400 miles of highway driving before its ned to “refuel” in 10 minutes or less, then I’ll happily consider your alternate fuel or electric vehicle...
Until then, I will continue to do the one thing that can happen on this planet, that as far as we know cannot happen on any other planet we have discovered to date... and that’s enjoy the energy created by combustion.
It’s like guns... if people think they are going away despite demand, they stock up.
My compact SUV has the same fuel efficiency numbers as a Toyota Yaris but more HP, interior room and is much more fun to drive. But, it sits a bit higher off the ground and has more head room.

The global warming that caused Puerto Rico’s power grid to collapse?

It seems more to keep that government on a collision course with consumers, i.e. the people it’s supposed to represent and serve.
Apparently the public has voted with their wallet and garage.
If everyone is driving electric cars we are going to need more power generation.
And when the recurring hurricanes and rains come to my area, people will need their own gas powered generators to charge their cars.

Oh I know... if you switched everything to electric you would need a lot more electrical generation capacity.
You have to replace the billions of gas pumps with electrical charging stations.... and need a complete upgrade to the electrical infrastructure.
This would take 5-10 years if the government made it number one priority and subsidized and it... and TRILLIONS of dollars... but its not, so the idea that we are just a few years away from an all electric car society is comical... and a pipe dream.
First thing that has to be solved is the range and recharge issue.. YOu must get range to what I have stated, and recharge down to the time frame I have indicated before an electric car is a viable replacement for most peoples vehicle needs.
Once you have that, then you have to deal with the infrastructure issues mentioned above, because the existing system can’t support it.
Reality is, even after they solve the technical issues of range and charging, you have many years and huge money spends required to get to a majority (let alone a soley) electric powered vehicle nation.
Ferrari’s get about 8mpg and only hold 2 people.
The climate nazis will have kittens if they ever decide to attack Hollywood’s toys.
How long does it take to refuel those cars? Is it like charging a cel phone?
OH NOES, THE SKY IS FALLING!!!
My 2014 Sorento 4 banger gets better gas mileage than my wife's 2009 Sentra, and is much safer and comfortable to drive (and it can haul a LOT more)....
Heck, if it took ten minutes to fill a gas tank, most people would find that unacceptable.

Ferrari almost always has a four seater available and 8 MPG might be right for burning up your tires on a test track session, other than that they have better fuel economy than the Corvette.

LOL. I’ve noticed that Corvettes and expensive sports cars are the slowest cars on the road because only old men with dreams of their youth can afford them. But once they get in the drivers seat, their bad vision and low T betrays the spirit of that young man.

So SUV’s caused the percentage of CO2 in the atmosphere from .0037 to .004%? I hate what the Government has done to cars.
