EXCLUSIVE: Trump hosts Amish in historic Oval Office visit
The Washington Times ^ | Sunday, December 22, 2019 | S.A. Miller

Posted on 12/30/2019 8:34:25 PM PST by Zhang Fei

President Trump began the holiday break by hosting an Amish delegation in the Oval Office, the first time members of the reclusive community have received that honor.

They might be an odd pairing — the brash and extravagant billionaire president and the humble Amish — but they enjoy a kinship in their Christian faith and work ethic, the Amish visitors told The Washington Times.

“He is a common man just like me and everybody else — very common, very friendly. He called us friends when we walked in there,” said Levi Miller, 56, an Amish farmer from Ohio. “It gets people excited that we have somebody in there who is not afraid to talk about Jesus Christ.”

Mr. Miller was among four Amish businessmen from Ohio who sat down for an exclusive interview with The Times following their Oval Office visit Friday, where they also met Vice President Mike Pence, acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and other top White House officials.

The Amish men described themselves as strong supporters of Mr. Trump and each denounced the House Democrats’ impeachment of the president as a waste of taxpayer money.

“We read the newspaper and it is just ‘impeachment this’ and ‘impeachment that.’ It’s a lot of hogwash,” said Ben Hostetler, 51, a woodworker. “What they are blaming Trump for is what they did themselves.”

The Amish businessmen credit Mr. Trump with fostering a robust economy, protecting religious freedom and adhering to conservative values.

Mr. Miller said the Amish experience the good economic times that Mr. Trump has ushered in, and many will back him in 2020.

“What we see happening at home. Everybody is upbeat. The stock market, everything is up — the economy, the jobs are available,” he said.

In our little town in Idaho, we now have about 15-families.
They opened a really great country store and deli located about 10-miles from town...I never thought it could make it, but it is packed every day.

Really nice, friendly folks...hard working and welcome neighbors.

...and that little article in "Lancaster Online" says...
The delegation, which included four Amish men from Ohio and two from Indiana, are the first Amish to be hosted in the White House by a U.S. president, the Washington Times reported.
None from Pennsylvania.

So true! those were scary years! don’t forget Israel also! He did all he can to undermind Israel, their safety and existence for 8 years(Gen. 12:1-3). My personal belief is that America is still here today and not in the ash-heap is because of Trump’s great support for the nation of Israel!

My experience as well... if it’s work related ok, if it’s personal no go ... at least that’s how I understood it. Ownership for convenience was a no sale.

Wow, that’s super close to where I grew up in Lyons (Green county) and Elnora (Daviess). After years I’m close to a community again in NE Ohio and able to enjoy the little things again. Still not quite the same as home, but close enough.

The Amish and most conservative Anabaptists like Old Order Mennonites do not vote as a rule. The foundation of their world view is based on a two kingdom theology which sees their primary allegiance to the Kingdom of God. Supporting politicians who may send men into war and who look at other human beings as objects of revenge would never fit into their practices as followers of Jesus Christ. So it is very unusual to see Amish people making statements about politics. However, I think they may be worried about retaining religious rights if a new, liberal Administration should infiltrate the White House, so perhaps they want to show particularly VP Pence that they appreciate the President’s stance on religious freedom.
