"Richard Jewell" flops at the box office its opening weekend following controversy

The weekend box office numbers are in, and one particular film flopped after facing controversy ahead of its debut. Clint Eastwood's "Richard Jewell" raked in only $5 million its opening weekend, about half of what was expected, according to IMDB's Box Office Mojo. The film faced criticism over its depiction of a real-life female reporter, Kathy Scruggs, who is played by actress Olivia Wilde.

"Richard Jewell" follows the story of the titular character, a security guard who was initially hailed as a hero but then suspected of planting a bomb at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Jewell was later exonerated. The movie depicts Scruggs, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper reporter, offering sex for confidential information from an FBI source about the case.

It is a non sequitur that the MSM, including CBS, does not like “Richard Jewell” as it portrays the MSM as the scum sucking hateful liberals that they really are. It also portrays the egotistical, self serving, incompetent, and arrogant FBI as they really are. The acting and story is tight and is well done, moreso than much of the junk that is out there. The MSM revels in the fact that right now it is losing money but I believe word of mouth will move it from the red to the black. The Deep State and the MSM are doing all they can to make the movie irrelevant.

I remember it well. It wasn’t just CBS.

If you have not seen this movie - you should. it’ll tell you what you’re up against. And Jewell wasn’t the first guy or the last to be setup in such a fashion.

There was a doctor they targeted after some Anthrax attacks through the mail. They had nothing on him. just leaked his name and all but ruined his career.

My only criticism of the movie was that it left out some details about what happened in the FBI and AJC after the case was dropped - probably at the request of the family.

Also, I don’t think this is the kind of movie that depends on opening weekend buzz. It should have legs for a while and will get a lot of viewers when it’s available to be streamed

I suspect the reason it is not doing well is because as in the theater near me, the show time is 9:30AM only. Just one show per day. At 9:30 AM.

Great movie. Saw it Friday and theater was full, got last two seats. I did notice that many places had it at noonish or after none pm, missing sweetspot of 6 to 8 start. But they added 7:15 the next day

Nope. It’s a great movie. I saw it and felt outraged and moved to action.

I thought about the reporters portrayal and the media’s outrage after the movie. This was my thoughts: I would love nothing more than to look these leftist reporters in the eyes and say: “It’s perfectly fine with you all when movies and TV take “liberties with history - like portraying Jesus out to be a homosexual. That’s ‘artistic license’ to you. But you scream bloody murder when the shoe is on the other foot. You are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites.”

Did it have Air Conditioning? Back in the 50’s A/C in the theatre was a big deal. Posters and A/C banners were hung all over the outside premise.

MSM has done it’s best to spike this movie including the whore critics panning it even though they know it is good film but the cause is more important. So far mission accomplished.

It was a good movie and well done. Different subject but same caliber as American Sniper. I recommend it, though because it’s not P.C., seems like you better hurry.

Young people support the movies and they don’t know who Richard Jewell is. They barely know who Clint Eastwood is.

We know that Scruggs was a flirty alcoholic that hung out in cop bars, and dressed provocatively. This idea that she slept with Don Johnson (her source on the story) is not outside the realm of possibility.

The left will tell demonstrable lies when portraying conservatives in leftie films. Eastwood's story has more elements of truth than Norma Raye or any of the other leftie hagiographies.
