Radio shock jock Don Imus, one of the early pioneers of his genre, died Friday less than two years after retiring, according to a family statement given to NBC New York.

He was 79.

The controversial morning personality’s last day on the radio was on March 29 of last year. He had announced on Jan. 22 that he was retiring, telling fans: “Turn out the lights...the party's over."

Right and it was something he greatly appreciated which is why he created the ranch the way he did.
He wanted the kids to experience the true breadth of ranch life, not some “dude ranch” fantasy.

Sorry to hear this. I listened to him in the morning often. He had a lot of the usual suspects as guests - Andrea Mitchell, Mike Barnicle, Doris Kearns Goodwin - but occasionally some conservatives. And he was occasionally very funny. RIP.

IF a talk radio host doesn’t ruffle some feathers they’re not gonna be a talk show host too long.

He was a real cowboy from his youth. Grew up on a ranch.

Right, you are!

It was the world of entertainment, music, sports, radio and show biz in general that modified that cowboy essence over time.

CNN just couldn’t resist taking a shot at him:

Radio shock jock Don Imus is dead at 79. He hosted a morning show heard across the US and sparked a public outcry over racist remarks in 2007.

Shock jock radio has never been my thing, but Imus was the pionner-icon of it.

Imus had to cancel his bomb button after 9-11.

His funniest era, maybe even golden age, was the mid to late 1990’s when he roasted the Clintons, one time in their presence.

“That’s Why the First Lady is a Tramp” is a classic.

Imus really went to town during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. He was mightily helped by Rob Bartlett & the Bartlettes. Their “I Got You Babe” was a real hoot.

But sooner or later, it’s time to turn out the lights ‘cause the party’s over. Ride off into the sunset, I-Man.

Got his real start in Cleveland before moving on to New York. Listening to him in the morning on the way to high school was almost a ritual. And the way he pronounced the name of the then mayor "Carrrllll Stokes" was hilarious and memorable.

RIP.

Have you read “Pontypool Changes Everything?” It’s deeper than the movie.

One of the greatest public sackings of any public person, let alone POTUS anyone has ever done. But his naming Clinton Bubba during the primaries got Clinton a lot of votes. Maybe too many.

I don’t remember the years but his morning radio show used to be simulcast on either the CNBC cable channel or the Fox Business cable channel for part of his morning show. He had some fairly conservative people on the TV with him and he was the only broadcast or cable news show I watched. He already then had health issues.
