Impeachment is already backfiring on the Democrats even before the full House votes on two articles of impeachment. A Democratic member of Congress is preparing to switch parties, joining Republicans amid the Democrat-led impeachment effort that has put dozens of moderate Democrats in a tough position with their Trump-supporting constituents.
Representative Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey has been in talks with top advisors for President Trump, according to The New York Times. Mr. Van Drew is concerned about losing his seat in the Democratic primary or in the 2020 general election. Van Drew's district is a traditionally Republican district that voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.
Van Drew won his seat in the 2018 midterm elections, following the retirement of former Republican Congressman Frank LoBiondo who represented New Jersey's second district for 24 years.
In a recent interview, Van Drew told Fox Business that some of his fellow House Democrats shared his concerns about the partisan impeachment of President Trump. Van Drew was one of two Democrats who joined with every single Republican in the House to vote against the impeachment inquiry resolution.
"My district is red — a good chunk of it — and they're definitely anti-impeachment," Van Drew recently told NBC News. "And then I have the part that is purple, and they are more pro-impeachment. So whatever you do, you're going to aggravate people.
According to the Times, sources expect Van Drew to make an official announcement about his switch to the Republican party sometime in the upcoming week, either immediately before or after the House votes to send two articles of impeachment to the Senate, both of which are expected to go nowhere.
I agree. We don't need a trophy like this abortion guy. Why risk the ire of God when He has watched over Trump all this time anyway?
Donald Trump may have won that district, but it seems highly unlikely that a "Deplorable" could win a House race there.
Trump will carry south NJ next year but unfortunately a Democrat will carry the state because most of the population lives in populous Democrat north NJ.
I’m going to watch him, before I give him a pass. If he is going to be a RINO, he should stay a Dem. However, if he is honest with his district, he should be a strong Rep.
The only dem I would want is a pro-life dem, if there are any. This issue is at the heart of the party.
The three vying for the Republican nomination are trying out conservative each other. On specifically calls himself a Trump Republican on the front page of his website. Van Drew has a $900,000 war chest vs $400,000 or less for the challengers. Primary is June 2 so about six months of campaigning. I could see a challenger taking him out.
If this is true, than tank, but no thanks

...... Ya ...... He’s doing what politicians do ..... He’s Triangulating his position to win an election ..... Me don’t trust unstable folks who seek popularity at any cost ......
He’ll be another effin Rino!
Taqiyya
I’ve heard the Republican running is even left of Van Drew!! The Republican running is an associate of Joe Biden and wants Trump impeached!! I’d welcome him, but I would keep a fire lit to know we are watching.
#WalkAway ... while you can.
I think this politician knows that his career is over when he switches parties....so I can only guess that he is pissed and is a classical libral not a progressive libral. I say lets be welcoming work with him where we can but long term he cant stay in the seat.
Has he been voting with dimocrats on all their trash? If so, send him packing.
I was thinking that democrats in districts that Trump won face a no win situation. If they vote party line for impeachment they will be defeated next year, and if they vote against it they will face the ire of their party.
The only way to possibly win would be to switch parties. They could probably get reelected and if enough of them do it to flip congress it would completely screw Pelosi and crew. Probably wishful thinking though.
Former PA Governor Robert Casey, Sr., was one of the last ones standing.
When the DNC muzzled him and refused to allow him to present a prolife speech at the national convention I knew that their ballyhooed "big tent" no longer had room for me.
Yes, I am an ex-Dem....quarter century distant.

You heard wrong. See my post above. His three Republican challengers are conservative.
