Jeremy Corbyn has announced plans to resign as leader of the Labour Party following the party's crushing defeat in Thursday's general election.
Speaking after his reelection as a member of Parliament for Islington North, he said he would remain in his post while the party "reflected" on the result but would not lead the party into another general election.
"I will not lead the party in any future general-election campaign," he said.
"I will discuss with our party to ensure there is a process now of reflection on this result and on the policies that the party will take going forward.
"I will lead the party during that period to ensure that the discussion takes place as we move on into the future."
A devastating night for Labour saw the party punished heavily in the north of England, where the Conservatives picked up dozens of Leave-voting seats they had not previously held.
Overall, the party lost dozens of seats, making it the party's worst result since 1935.
Numerous senior figures are expected to enter the race to replace Corbyn in the coming days and weeks.
Disagreements within the party since Corbyn was elected as leader in 2015 erupted again in the early hours of Friday morning when the scale of Labour's defeat became clear.

Another elite liberal bites the dust!
In the old days, they would fall on their swords.
Just sayin’ ...
Chase the islamocommie down the street.
In before Powers Boothe.
“resign as leader” how does a do nothing resign..it’s not like he can do less than nothing?
As I was watching the BBC last night, I did notice a consistent theme among Labour candidates and activists. That theme was Jeremy Corbyn, his lack of appeal to voters and his Red-tinged Manifesto.
His opposition to Brexit also made him anathema to Labour voters in blue collar ridings.
He should get a villa on the Gush Katie beach in Gaza. A “country” he loves more than Britain...
I hope he falls down the stairs on the way out.
Shut up, and go away!
This is a good thing. Labor will now go even further to the Left.
Hopefully, progressives/leftists around the world will continue taking up the a**. These worthless sots need to be crushed and rejected. They are malignancies on civil societies everywhere.
well... buh-bye!
Glad to see he immediately blamed something other than his own policies, he blamed the voters and Brexit.
He hasn’t bit it yet.
That’s a non-resignation resignation.
Corby’s waiting for a golden handshake.
The Labour would love to dig up either Gus Hall or Lenin to lead them...
I guess he needs for time to be an anti-Semite.
Gee, and I thought all leftists were free of such biases.
