About 50,000 Cook County residents who receive food stamps are going to have to find jobs next year or risk losing their benefits.
Starting Jan. 1, food stamp recipients in Cook County who are able-bodied, under the age of 50 and not living with children or other dependents will be restricted to three months of food assistance in a three-year period unless they work at least 80 hours a month. They can also meet the requirement by participating in a work-related activity, such as job training or volunteering.
The vast majority of Illinois 1.8 million SNAP recipients most of whom are either elderly, children or people with disabilities are unaffected by the change. But it will be a huge shift in Cook County, where 50,000 of the countys 826,000 food stamp recipients will be subject to work requirements for the first time since the federal rules went into effect in the mid-1990s.
State officials and social service groups worry people who struggle to find or keep jobs will be driven out of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP or food stamps, leaving them hungry and putting pressure on food pantries. They say there isnt enough federal funding to help connect them with jobs.
Quite frankly, a lot of the folks who are not able to meet those requirements will not participate in the program and just drop out, said Grace Hou, secretary of the Illinois Department of Human Services. Single adults receive, on average, $200 a month in food aid.

Oh, man, and Jussie’s series got canceled, too. Poor guy is going to be wandering the Chicago streets, dining in Subways and waiting for a pair of buffed African-American white supremacists to throw bleach at him. Oh, wait, he’s already tried that. Can the unemployment line be far behind? Three hots and a cot in the Cook County Calaboose?
SNAP benefits: Which cities have the most people on food stamps?
Can this be right??
I bet most of the 50,000 have an “attitude-disability”. Their crappy attitude and absence of both integrity and a work ethic, leave them not wanting a job. Mainly, they need to learn the 3 s’s: shower, show-up and shut-up. Do you job.

/sarc - you know that will enter the picture.
The 400,000 illegals in Chicago, a sanctuary city, don’t seem to have trouble finding work, or getting food stamps. OK, probably less than half that are adult illegals, but still.

Gotta fund those fat-cat union pensions, don’t ‘cha know!

That's a lot of Doritos and diet Coke - gotta watch a lotta TV whilst consuming said essentials

Tuesday Weld was an actress on “Dobie Gillis” and referenced in the song, “New Frontier”
The album is a masterpiece...as is the video for this song!

Thank you.
6% “might” lose food stamps.
Those who think there is only 6% getting this who don’t deserve it, raise your hand....and then slap yourself.
Only 6% fraud (or corruption) in the food stamp program in Cook County (or anywhere else)? Yeah, I believe that.
As an aside, one wonders how this would read if Republicans were running Cook county for 80 years. Think that might have been mentioned in the “news” article?
Thank you.
I wonder how much of an effect that will have on local supermarkets/Wal-Mart?
1) thanks very much for the info and the video.
2) I may have missed the song but I didn’t escape awareness of Tuesday Weld when I was in junior high (”middle school”) and high school and the show was first run.
On the Naked City series 1962 episode “A Case Study of Two Savages” she played a ruthless serial killer with Rip Torn based on Bonnie and Clyde (real life news stories—before the famous 1968 movie). Still had the emanation of “I always get my way. Get used to it.” Like Kate Upton today.
Quite frankly, a lot of the folks who are not able to meet those requirements will not participate in the program and just drop out, said Grace Hou,
Im not seeing a problem here.
