The University of Virginia canceled the 21-gun salute portion of its annual Veterans Day ceremony citing gun violence.
James Ryan, the universitys president, posted a statement on Facebook explaining that there were concerns about firing weapons on school property in light of recent school shootings.
He said there were two specific reasons.
"First, to minimize disruptions to classes, given that this event is located at the juncture of four primary academic buildings and is held at a time that classes are in session; and second, recognizing concerns related to firing weapons on the Grounds in light of gun violence that has happened across our nation, especially on school and university campuses," the president wrote.
As you might imagine the outrage among veterans and military supporters has been severe.
"I am very disillusioned, very upset, and very surprised that they would make such a decision," veteran Jay Levine told television station WHSV.

I can envision a squad of Chinese soldiers storming a U.S. elementary school, firing their weapons as they charge. The snowflake teachers and the kids all stand up at their desks, immobilized by the constant pacification of two generations of media propaganda, and school propaganda. They don’t last long as perfect targets. When it was over the Chinese soldiers found they had enough ammo to go on to another school ...
Why DON’T we have gun education in middle / high school?
Reminds me of fifty years ago when, after the murder of Bobby Kennedy, the anti-violence hysteria spread throughout the USA.
One university had their Track and Field team do away with “violence” by banning the starting gun.
A mural painted of Harriet Tubman back then showed her carrying a rifle because handguns were “bad” and they did not want to associate her with handguns. To my knowledge, he was not known to carry a rifle, always a handgun.

People need to light the phones up at UVA to let them know!
“As you might imagine the outrage among veterans and military supporters has been severe.”
...and that outrage needs to go beyond today.
[[Does anyone care if we vets care about our past ans our rituals?]]
Nope- So You pipe down Mr- we’re talking about snowflakes with their precious delicate hypersensitive feelings which are far far more important than anything else- ever-
Why on earth is a bastion of communism, an American University doing even holding a Military celebration? They only recognize May Day.
To state the obvious, during WWI millions lived and died under heavy artillery fire, machinegun and rifle fire, etc., sometimes for a period of years. Today’s youth* cannot handle hearing 21 blank shots in remembrance of their suffering and service. This ought to be a “teachable moment” at UVA, but I doubt it will.
*I plead guilty of gross generalization. My hope is that most students have more strength and character than their “student government leaders” (Hillary Rodham wannabees elected by a tiny fraction of students).
[[to minimize disruptions to classes,]]
Huh? They disrupt classes- the liberals that is- by staging school walkouts to protest climate change- liberals are blatant lying hypocrites-
The RPMs that Thomas Jefferson is undergoing in his grave keep increasing.
4 in my family went to UVA, and this disgusts me. Minimize classroom disruption? Poor snowflakes!
Who are these unstable people?
Are there any normal left?
One sad and also proud moment was when my mom and I accepted the folded flag and shell casings from when my dad was interred at the National Cemetery in Riverside CA.
Eight years on, my son still wears one of the shell casings on a chain around his neck, along with dad's dog tags.
Look us up when you do...
40+ years since my dad. Somewhere along the way the casing have gone astray. Flag is still proudly displayed. Salute to Veterans.
The ache never goes away.
I worked at a company a few years back and a few of us were sent to a training seminar in an office building next to the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, MD. Everyday we would break for lunch from 11:30 to 12:30 and would walk over to the harbor complex to grab a bite to eat.
Every day at noon they would shoot off a cannon from the frigate U.S.S. Constellation docked at the harbor. The interesting thing I noticed is that a minute beforehand (maybe 30 seconds), they would blast an air horn. And at the sound of the air horn, all the pigeons in the Inner Harbor would fly off between the buildings away from waterside. The cannon would then fire at precisely 12:00 noon and... as the smoke was carried away by the breeze, within seconds, all the pigeons would return.
So I think there’s your answer. Give the pige... err, I mean snowflakes a warning blast with an airhorn and a few seconds to cover their ears and/or run to an insulated safe space... in the basement maybe...
Like the Univ. can’t make email announcements, announcements via cell phones, posters, etc to let students know in advance.
What BS
“...Is there nothing Leftists dont ruin?....”
Nope. Everything the communists touch, they ruin.
The useless POSs are the BORG of this century.
I will never forget the local National Guard doing the 21 gun Veterans’ Day salute in the small cemetery behind the 19th century church in the little village where I grew up in southeastern PA. It was in the early to mid 1950’s and I would look forward not only to the sound of the M-1’s firing but also picking up the brass after the ceremony was over. I was about six years old the first time my mother took me. Fourteen years later we trained on the M-1 in boot camp except the rounds weren’t blanks.
