Is California Becoming Premodern?
Townhall.com ^ | October 31, 2019 | Victor Davis Hanson

More than 2 million Californians were recently left without power after the state's largest utility, Pacific Gas and Electric -- which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year -- preemptively shut down transmission lines in fear that they might spark fires during periods of high autumn winds.

Consumers blame the state for not cleaning up dead trees and brush, along with the utility companies for not updating their ossified equipment. The power companies in turn fault the state for so over-regulating utilities that they had no resources to modernize their grids.

Californians know that having tens of thousands of homeless in their major cities is untenable. In some places, municipal sidewalks have become open sewers of garbage, used needles, rodents and infectious diseases. Yet no one dares question progressive orthodoxy by enforcing drug and vagrancy laws, moving the homeless out of cities to suburban or rural facilities, or increasing the number of mental hospitals.

Taxpayers in California, whose basket of sales, gasoline and income taxes is the highest in the nation, quietly seethe while immobile on antiquated freeways that are crowded, dangerous and under nonstop makeshift repair.

Gas prices of $4 to $5 a gallon -- the result of high taxes, hyper-regulation and green mandates -- add insult to the injury of stalled commuters. Gas tax increases ostensibly intended to fund freeway expansion and repair continue to be diverted to the state's failing high-speed rail project.

Seriously....I cannot tell you how my wife and I adored hanging out in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Fairfield, Long Beach, Anaheim, Palmdale, Bakersfield, Hermosa Beach, etc., alongside the Japanese, the Chinese, the Koreans, the Indians, the Hispanics, the African-Americans, the Italian, Seafood, Japanese & Chinese restaurants in San Francisco, The California Beaches, the California Girls, the Beach Boys, the Hot Rodders, the Aerospace plants, literally paradise in the USA. And...now look at how those low life, scum and vermin Democrats have ruined California for all of us....SAD, but...it was preventable...no more...it’s done!!! It’s called self-inflicted wounds by stupid, dumb voters!!!

As goes California, so goes the nation.

This is a state that Reagan once governed. Illegal immigration. Cultural Marxist control of the school system. Mass illegal immigration. Motor voter and liberal welfare state.

Then when the libs leave the hellhole for Colorado, Arizona, or Texas how do they vote? Democrat. Now those states are in jeopardy.

ALL of the problems of California are coming to the rest of the nation. Doesn’t take long for a prosperous country to turn into a socialist nightmare. Look at Venezuela.

Let's also be fair and recall that Reagan signed a bill allowing abortions in CA IIRC ~ 67/68.

I believe this signaled to the Supremes in 73 it was politically ok to "legalize" murder in this country.

Probably his greatest mistake.

We had to use candles recently, because our power was out for several days due to a storm that knocked trees and power lines down

Candles are archaic.

A Coleman lantern is better and absent that, a kerosene lamp is also superior

In San Francisco the other day, I was chatting with a retired couple who had recently moved to that city from Chicago. When I asked them why they chose San Francisco, of all possible locations, they replied that they actually sought out the most liberal city they could find. Incredible.

What kind of an idiot does it take to try to invent a new word for something long defined.

If Hanson is an idiot, commend me to the same condition.

SUPER: 200 Years Later

CHARLETON HESTON rides a horse along the beach.

His jaw drops as he pulls up the horse to a stop. He dismounts, tears in his eyes as he drops to his knees.

                              CHARLETON HESTON

You maniacs! You blew it up! Damn you! Damn you to hell!

The scene expands to show the ruins of the Golden Gate Bridge.

So true mo, so very true. The democrats have perfected voter fraud, heck look how many posters right here on this thread they have fooled.

Reminds me of some areas during Obamas election. He won many areas with upwards of 114% of the vote.......and all people said was, yea he did real well in those areas?!

I think Cali is going to have to go through a huge mindset reset. Unfortunately I don't think they are ready for that yet. I believe things are going to have to get worse before they are ready to hear reason. They haven't hit bottom yet.

It is going to get so bad that people will literally flee the state, abandoning jobs, property, everything by the tens of thousands, maybe several hundred thousand in the span of a few weeks if there is a virtual collapse. I look for neighboring states to have to set up literal refugee camps. Cali will eventually have to call out their guard to re-establish order and safety in the streets.

When we get to that phase, then I think they may be approaching the reset. It will require changing out the governor and legislature en-masse. When - and it is when not if, because they cannot continue like this - when this happens it will be a day to celebrate. They like to say Cali leads the country. Sadly both Cali and the country have been turning far too leftist, far too socialist. Perhaps Cali can actually lead the country, bottom-out as the necessary object lesson in the failures of socialism, and spare the country from having to make the same mistake. So maybe we should encourage Cali to hasten their descent into madness so they can eventually see the error of their ways and begin the recovery.
