Tesla Model S doors wouldn't unlock as driver burned to death inside...
Sky News ^ | 24 October 2019 | unknown

A doctor in Florida burned to death because the battery in his Tesla burst into flames and the car's futuristic door handles wouldn't allow a police officer to rescue him, according to a legal complaint.

Dr Omar Awan died in February after his Tesla hit a palm tree.

...part of the design of the Tesla Model S is to retract the door handles into the car and they then "auto-present" and pop out when the car's key fob is detected nearby.

However, the handles malfunctioned and people were not able to open the doors

Dr Awan had no broken bones or other injuries resulting from the crash.

“Why did this driver choose to drive a Tesla over a conventional luxury car ?”

As I noted earlier, only a Tesla SENDS A MESSAGE (to those who don’t care about climate change).

Elon Musk is mega-rich fool. He’s going to lose all his investors money soon enough.

Next he'll have to announce driverless/riderless cars lol.

What a horrible way to go.

Don’t the folks that design these cars ever think about real life situations that come up with their vehicles when operating them?

Life is not a test lab.

Sheesh.

“When you get caught in a blizzard, on your way home from work, and it takes 6 hours to travel 30 miles because of the traffic, with your heater and defroster blasting, and wipers and lights going, and your radio going, and there was no place to charge your car at work, you are STILL going to get home? Physics beats smug, every time.”

Hadn’t considered it, but that did happen to me and my family several years ago on Route 80, just inside California (Donner Pass), on a snowy New Year’s night, where traffic took hours as the CHP required chains. Luckily we had a FOSSIL FUEL car or we would have been frozen stiff (but, yes, it would have reduced our carbon footprint, drastically).

Locks and door handles may have had nothing to do with his being trapped. In a crash it is possible for the doors to be physically jammed shut whether or not there is power.

“It’s obvious you’ve never been in one.”

Obviously, as I’m still here.

“In addition, due to airbags, cars know when they’re in an impact scenario. Why not also open the doors, rather than needing a brain surgeon to figure out how to get out alive?”

Two words. Ejector Seat.

He may well have hit the tree solid enough to jam the doors shut against the front fender or quarter panel. I don’t recall how big the console is but he might well not been able to crawl across to access the passenger side door.

I never thought to get caught like that in Oklahoma City. But it happened. 8 inches of snow, in about 8 hours, and Oklahoma has NO snow equipment. No plows, no salt shakers, just a dump truck of sand with a worker in back with a shovel, one per county, and that's only for intersections.

Montreal is equipped for snow. Whole big bunches of the country are not. In Vermont, the salt shakers are out, plowing and salting at the first flake, and do not stop until the sun shines, again.

I thought Chicago could handle it, until '79, when it started to snow on New Year's Eve, and didn't stop until March. 72 inches of snow, and it never got above freezing... Even the El froze.

What’s the danger of the gases given off?

O2 displacement?

Lung sear from heat or chemical burns?

Poisonous?

Whats not to like for a conservative.

What I don't like is that they perform at peak only for a short period of time and they're useless on racetracks. You get about 5 minutes. That's it.

They're amazing scoot around cars, have impressive tech and great at what they are, but they don't hold up on road courses and can't really be called "performance" cars.

Or you can just let the guy burn to death to keep from scratching your gun. Not much of a choice in my mind, but then again I’ve pulled more than a few accident victims from wrecked cars. You use what’s at hand to get the job done.

Yes they do, which is why the Tesla Model S's interior door handle was designed to work perfectly well if the power failed. See post #51.

LOL! Why I call them a one trick pony. Do their little acceleration stunt once, then auntie's Corolla becomes serious competition.

The golf kart fan boyz always get irate when you laugh at their stuff, much like the Apple fan boyz.

I will add this to the list of numerous reasons why I would never consider owning a Tesla.
