California governor signs bill letting murderers and violent criminals serve on juries

We’ve reported on states changing laws to allow felons to vote. Then you’ve got California releasing murderers because it “feels right” to give them another chance.

Now, in another sign that the inmates are running the prison, the governor of California has approved “The Right to a Jury of Your Peers”.

It’s a move that will allow people with a prior felony conviction to serve on juries in California for the first time.

Prior to this, there was a law in California that excluded felons from jury service. Local media backed the legislation

...

The state Assembly approved the legislation on a 47-26 vote. The Senate gave its final OK on a 29-10 vote.

“SB 310 will ensure that Californians can be tried by a true jury of their peers,” said the bill’s author.

...

The American Civil Liberties Union and the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, along with many other social justice warrior groups, were thrilled.

...

Obviously many are against SB310. Those fighting against it argued that people with felony convictions are too biased to ever serve on a jury.

...

California is clearly trying to push as far left as possible.

Last month, California Governor Gavin Newsom commuted the sentences of 21 violent offenders. Among them were four men who have convictions related to murders in Sacramento County.

...

All of them, who were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in Sacramento County, have now been granted commutations by Newsom.

...

It’s now up to the California Supreme Court to upheld or reject the commutations. In his final weeks in office, former Governor Jerry Brown had 10 clemency actions blocked by the court. It was the first time since 1930 that a California governor’s commutation requests had been denied.

This is too much like one of "The Lighter Side Of..." cartoons that Dave Berg did for MAD Magazine. This judge asks some guy before him "How do you plead?"

"Innocent your honor."

"Then there will be a trial by a jury of your peers."

"Thats going to be tough to do your honor. Where are you going to five twelve drug dealers like me?"

My dad worked in a prison. A nasty maximum security prison. You might be surprised to hear that this may backfire on liberals big-time. Nobody can better judge if a person is guilty of a crime than an inmate who has been surrounded by criminals for 20 years. A classic be careful what you wish for situation.

Newsom is daring us to recall him. That, or he knows we are going to, and he’s trying to establish as much of his agenda as he can before we do.

Prosecutors will be able to keep the worst felons off of juries by using their peremptory challenges. But they get only so many challenges. So many bleeding hearts who would have been challenged will now slip through.

Maybe that was the goal all along.

If a convicted felon is stated to be the “peer” of the person on trial, are they then not saying that person is also a felon?

If called to jury duty you can say you are not eligible as you have committed no felonies.

If it is a death penalty case, then they will have to dig up the jurors.

Well, not so much anymore in CA, but that’s where that ‘logic’ leads.

I have the same question.

A peer would be non-felon in the eyes of a just law, that whole "presumed innocent" thingie.

I'm so glad that I moved from suicidal, once-golden state.

I do worry about my friends and fam there and the many good Californians who do not deserve the malignant self-destruction that appears to be in a power dive.

The accused is pre-sumed innocent. Those convicted of murder are not presumed innocent. Therefore convicted murderers on a jury is not a jury of ones peers.

If a felon is to biased for a jury why isn’t a non-felon also? If a prosecutor is biased towards conviction, why do they become judges? Bias, bias everywhere there’s bias. Can’t you see the signs?

Someone kills someone you love.

Sitting on the jury are two people who were convicted of murder and spent 20 years in prison.

Would you like the idea either of them could block a conviction?
