Supreme Court rejects challenge to public school coursework on Islam

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rebuffed an appeal from a Christian former high school student who argued coursework on Islam at her Maryland school violated her First Amendment rights.

The dispute involves Caleigh Wood, a student at La Plata High School in Charles County, Maryland, who enrolled in a state-mandated World History course during the 2014-2015 school year.

As part of the class, the then-junior was required to complete coursework on “The Muslim World,” in which she learned about Islam. Wood took issue with two parts of the class: a PowerPoint presentation that said most Muslims’ faith “is stronger than the average Christian” and a fill-in-the-blank worksheet in which she had to write, “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah,” which she said was in violation of her Christian faith.

Wood refused to complete some of the class assignments, which led to a lower grade.

The school “subjected Ms. Wood to this promotional instruction in Islam, and also refused to grand her an opt out or alternative assignment when Ms. Wood, holding fast to her Christian beliefs, refused to write that the Muslim god is the only god,” her lawyers said in filings with the Supreme Court.

Wood sued Principal Evelyn Arnold and Vice Principal Shannon Morris in January 2016, alleging her First Amendment rights had been violated.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with Arnold and Morris, ruling the teachings at issue “did not impermissibly endorse any religion nor did they compel Wood to profess any belief.”

Well, why not write this:

Muslims believe women and children are property, that non believers are slaves to believers and that lying, cheating and stealing are acceptable to further the faith, and that the etymology of the Muslin god is taken from an ancient pagan moon god of the Saudi peninsula. Also, pedophilia and human slavery are acceptable practices. This is what Muslims believe.

If asked what Christians generally believe, should the correct answer be the Westminster confession or an in my own words expression of what I understand? Christians confessions begin with “I or WE believe in One God....”

Silly me. I go to England and specifically to London twice a year for extended trips. Oxford Street, I can definitely say I’ve seen that many times. As for shopping and interacting with Londoners, I do see Muslim women working in shops wearing simple scarves or veils but not the complete outfits.

You missed the point and have not proven the school’s actions.

If she’s supposed to do it because “you’re a Moslem now”, that’s one thing.

If she had to answer what their creed it, that is another.

So? Same question. If you are answering “what is their creed?”, big deal.

It is time to vote in a new school board and have them clean house. That is all that needs to be done.

A school board is the agent of the voters. The school board appoints the superintendent who then sets the course.

School boards are mostly veterans of the public school system and are very much a part of the problem

As a kid, I lived almost two years in Tehran and had to leave in a very expedient manner.

I imagine there is a fatwa on me as well.

If the question was, “Who do Christians believe Jesus is?”, then the right answer would be, “Jesus is the only begotten Son of God.” That doesn’t mean the student would believe it or agree with it and should not cause a problem.

Nor should answering questions about what Muslims believe.

SCOTUS declined to take up the case. Doesn’t mean they have a view on the merits just that they think it would not make for good precedent.

The Muslim recent historical uptick in the UK cane under the guise of EU ‘immigration’ but in fact is, as it has been throughout history, a colonization.

In France in the 1980s, Algerian Muslims migrated to Paris and to the towns and villages wherever they could settle. Algerians were at first allowed because historically Algeria had been an extension of France in the sense of French Africa or France South, France along its mainland Mediterranean coast is known as ‘Le Midi’ meaning ‘The Middle’. I lived in Paris and in the south along the Mediterranean.

During my time there I met many Muslims, they were pleasant, very agreeable, and seemed to fill a need for workers in cafes and restaurants.

But as time went by, the 1% became 5% became 10% became 15% and with an increasing presence the Muslim way of life became very vocal, aggressive, demanding, and quite apart from France culturally. The French reacted by relocating Algerians to Algeria with offers of money, land, positions. The ethnic tension was palpable but was eventually successful because the relocation was in large part a better deal for most Algerians in France proper. It helped that the French are very nationalistic and proud of their culture and history and knew historically how to deal with Islam at its door so to speak.

France was lucky.

Muslims do not asimilate, They take over. It’s a slow process but as soon as they have the numbers they go for political power to complete the conquest.

Muslims and their sympathizers will say by what I have written that I am Islamophobic. I don’t care what they say. I am not Islamophobic, I am Islamo-suspicious because the truth is not in these people, the light is not inside them.

this has been going on for a long time in schools- and schools have been forced to STOP requiring students to write out that muslim proclamation of faith- This isn’t the first case, and it was NOT in response to a question “What do muslism believe”

Here is a link to a very similar case:

https://gellerreport.com/2018/05/wva-school-dawah.html/

Again- the school KNOWS what they are doing when they require kids to do these ‘lessons’, muslim apologist’s explanations not withstanding!

Why aren’t the Muslim students required to answer the same questions about Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism? Are they not also “world religions”? Why only Islam?

I am torn. School is for learning. History of religion is one of the coursework. Allah is a true god is historical in Muslim religion. But saying Muslim is better then Christian is false and she could have written a debate on it.

I remember we studied the Reformation in HS, and no religious opinions ever entered the discussions.

Teachers were different back then.................
