California wildfires are bad. Climate change will make them even worse, new study says

As bad as wildfires have been in Northern and Central California in recent years, another new study shows that climate change could make them even worse in the coming years.

That study, published by researchers from Brown University in the journal Environmental Research Letters, found that “climate has been the main driver of fire on a regional scale” in the Sierra Nevada region, according to Richard Vachula, the study’s lead author.

“We find that warm and dry conditions promote fire, which in light of climate model predictions suggests that future fires may be more extensive than we have observed in the last century,” he said in prepared remarks.

Previous studies have found that even wet winter conditions may not be enough to prevent a catastrophic summer season.

The team also looked at archaeological records of the Miwok Native American tribe, “that inhabited these mountains for millennia,” which used fire to control underbrush growth, according to the report.

The data suggested that even with those controlled burns, climate remained the dominant factor behind fire activity at the regional level.

“Our results are significant because they clarify the relative roles of human management and climate as controls of fire regimes in California, and they highlight the need to prepare for future fire activity,” Vachula said in prepared remarks.

Meanwhile, my Wisconsin friends are blaming all of the flooding there on climate change.

Brush clearing is actually BS. For a year I’ve driven through the WIDTH of the Malibu fire (forget the official name of it) daily. The WIDTH. It went through all at once and it was 5 miles WIDE. It crossed over a 10-lane freeway without one moment of pause. That kind of fire power is not going to respond to small brush clearing.

Since CA already has to do without power, why don’t we ask them to be the test Pilot program for living Green ie do without all that AOC et al says we have to in order to be compliant with the Green Laws. If it works, great. If not, well.........

Stating the obvious...

The study actually sets up two possible outcomes.

They actually do...if you are not willing to manage the additional Grass/plant growth that additional moisture produces afterwards.

But...you wouldn’t want to damage any native grass that rains provide.

Let's stick to the subject.

It was the lack of cleared brush UNDER THE POWER LINES that allowed them to spark the fire.

Or, so goes the logic that made PG&E liable.

So, once the fire is started I don't care how far it jumps.

Ok, I’ll buy that. I guess I was thinking of the PSAs to trim hedges around your home. Which won’t do squat when a big one comes rushing in.

Correction:....a new study shows that geo-enginering/weather modification by NOAA/NASA could make them even worse in the coming years ....

‘climate model predictions suggests that future fires may be more extensive’

then again, those same models suggest (not suggests) that future fires may not be more extensive...

>>>Since climate change has to be real (wink wink)

Climate change is real. Manmade climate change on the global scale is not. Manmade climate change on the local scale is real and accounts for the rise in temperatures, especially overnight lows, in urban areas. It's called the heat-island effect.

When it comes to Cali - their climate is certainly changing. It is returning to normal after a century of above-normal precipitation...and that's going to be a problem.

Yep - maybe we should publish some of our own “New Studies” on the mental state of those pushing this crap...
