Trump’s making a big mistake in betraying the Kurds

Turkish jets struck a Kurdish base near the Iraq-Syria border late Monday night, the first grim fruits of President Trump’s decision to order US forces out of the way — a decision we fear Trump will come to regret.

We’ll grant that the president is delivering on a campaign promise here: Like most Americans, he doesn’t want this nation serving as the world’s policeman; other countries should share more of the burden when it comes to both troops and money.

Or, as he tweeted Monday, “it is time for us to get out of these ridiculous Endless Wars.”

He has a point, big-picture — but he’s making a big mistake here. Leaving Syria puts multiple US interests at risk. He’s not putting an end to “endless wars,” he’s planting the seeds for future ones.

Every U.S. President since GHWB, has turned their backs on the Kurds. And I don’t think Carter’s CIA, before Iran’s revolution was that nice to them either.

Trump could find that abandoning one’s allies works both ways.

Which ally do we really need or depend upon?

Take any EU country out of NATO and NATO will shrug.

If the USA leaves NATO, there is no longer a NATO, or UN, or World Bank, or WTO or ...

We don't need those piss ant countries, and we should stop kissing their collective asses.

The only thing worse than a self hating Jew, is a self hating American, and we need to stop.

I believe that we are better than any country on earth, not because our people are better, but because our Constitution makes this the absolute best place in the world.

The left is always trying to destroy the Constitution because it conflicts with their world view.

“After twenty years...”

A lot longer than that.

In 1991 our fellow usaf fliers were on the herd a Kurd mission That’s almost thirty years

I spent seven months in the desert to come home to ‘no blood for oil’

After which I watched Bill Clinton increase our dependence on oil from these people by at least double

Same sign carriers don’t want to know.

Trumps doing what we should have done as soon as we got back from Saudi and a long time before that

No blood for oil

Get out of there

“For history minded fellow Freepers, the history of this area was seriously disrupted by the Sykes-Picot Treaty between France and Great Britain after WWI. “

We look back and the shape of things to come is clear to us. But to Britain and France the lands they carved up were wild lands populated by tribes of people who stoned women and sold slaves. It wasn’t worth the time of the people who led empires to figure out the Byzantian intricacies of powerless people when all they had to do was Christianize them and bring them civilization. (Churchill’s world view.)

Wall Street Journal - President Trump’s defeat of Islamic State as a territorial power was a major foreign-policy success, yet he may now undo it with a retreat from Syria that will also signal to U.S. allies that the White House can’t be trusted.

Interestingly, no Democrats mentioned that when the kenyan ignored our treaty with Ukraine during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As long as you have money to give, anyone in that part of the world will be your friend or ally. There is no common history, culture or loyalty that binds us with any of them. The Kurds are no more our “friends” than the Saudis.

This is the NEW YORK Post. Slightly less left. Interesting though, the left gets what they have wanted a president to do for years but instead of crediting Trump, the stories from the WAPO are that he is bad because he betrayed the Kurds and went against the will of military commanders and strategerists.

“retreat from Syria”

Retreat? I don’t think that means what they think it means

“If we didn’t have troops there now, would we have a good reason to send them?”

That’s a good way of looking at it. The politicians should give us an answer to that question.

All these neocons who want to put troops in harms way should pick up a gun and go fight.

Great idea. See if they think the effort is worth their blood.

Off topic but weather coming in. Pushing my Broadus antelope hunt back a few days. Will miss the opener but travel from the Bitterroot should be easier. Hope winter is good for you.

This is the NEW YORK Post.

Oops.

Well, they can go with the WAPO staff when they join the Kurdish mercenary force in Syria. In fact, I’d like to see the CNN, MSNBC, NPR, ABC, CBS, NYT, and any I might have missed go along with them. The whole lot of them will perform far better as cannon fodder than they have as “journalists.”

Trump’s got a point, the Kurds and the Turks have been killing each other for hundreds of years. Why should Americans be drawn into that battle? Every time there is a fight we have to get involved while we can’t even defend our own borders. Let the UN (sic) do something for a change and send their troops to keep the peace. We can always provide the Kurds with money, and military equipment to defend themselves but no troops.

Ayuh, that's what I was thinking. So-called Kurdistan still exists in Iraq. Let that be the message sent and not the coda of withdrawing vulnerable, highly trained Americans from a danger zone in which they no longer need be present.

OMG, we can't betray the Kurds even though half of them are outright Communists, a quarter of them are loyal to Iran, and the remaining quarter are in it for the $200 and three cartons of cigarettes they're paid every month.

When the Turks start gassing them bomb the Turks. Otherwise let the Turks, Iranians, Syrians, Iraqis, and Kurds finish this fight they've been having off and on, with the parties shifting who they're allied with from time to time, for at least the past thousand or so years.
