‘Foreign Policy is in Shambles’: Colin Powell Unloads on Trump and the Republican Party
M ^ | Oct 6th, 2019 | Charlie Nash

Former Secretary of State and retired four-star U.S. Army General Colin Powell described foreign policy under President Donald Trump as “in shambles,” in an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria Sunday.

“I was a Republican who was Ronald Reagan’s National Security Advisor. I was a Republican who worked for George Herbert Walker Bush, and worked for George W. Bush. I’m a moderate Republican who believes that we should have strong foreign policy, strong defense policy, that we have to look out for our people, and we ought to work hard to making sure we’re one country and one team,” Powell declared. “And so, on that basis, I call myself a Republican.”

After characterizing himself, Powell moved on to condemn the Republican party for enabling Trump.

“The Republican Party has got to get a grip on itself. Right now, Republican leaders and members of the Congress, in both the Senate and in the House, are holding back because they’re terrified of what will happen to any one of them if they speak out,” he said. “Will they lose a primary? I don’t know why that’s such a disaster, but will they lose a primary?

There in lies the problem with every officer above full bird. You must become a politician yourself and kiss the rings of the powers “that be” - house and senate - if you expect to get promoted. I can’t count the number of flag officers in my life time who have changed their allegiance during their career to comport with the political winds.

“Tiger, one day you will come to a fork in the road and you’re going to have to make a decision about which direction you want to go. He raised his hand and pointed. “If you go that way you can be somebody. You will have to make compromises and you will have to turn your back on your friends. But you will be a member of the club and you will get promoted and you will get good assignments.” Then Boyd raised his other hand and pointed in another direction. “Or you can go that way and you can do something- something for your country and for your Air Force and for yourself. If you decide you want to do something, you may not get promoted and you may not get the good assignments and you certainly will not be a favorite of your superiors. But you won’t have to compromise yourself. You will be true to your friends and to yourself. And your work might make a difference. To be somebody or to do something. In life there is often a roll call. That’s when you will have to make a decision. To be or to do? Which way will you go?

John Boyd

Or as Ross Perot used to say, “A perfumed prince”.

That was David Hackworth.

6 Says the guy who got us into the Iraq War.

8 The guy that F’d up, listened to junk INTEL, and got us into Iraq is giving us advice? Oh....mmmkay....

23 Sorry, but this guy is part of the reason we had to go BACK into IRAQ a second time....

Not the way I remember it. Powell advocated for an economic blockade of Iraq and not for troops on the ground. It was Bush I's fu State Department that fouled up Iraq. Sadaam got the wrong impression from U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie that the U.S. would look the other way when he invaded Kuwait. After RWR provided military intelligence to Sadaam during the Iran-Iraq War. Don't recall the goof ball from the State Dept. who mucked around for a year trying to establish the transitional government.

Don't get me wrong - I detest the Powell. When he called the GOP racist and came out in support of BHO and HRC I completely washed my hands of the man.

I remember asshats like him saying the same things about Reagan when proposing “Star Wars” and the like before the Soviet Union collapsed. Sometimes you have to break eggs to make an omelet.

Nope, Powell is on the record multiple times advising Bush to not press on to Baghdad because he feared the video fo the “highway of death” would turn public opinion against the war.

Powell was stuck in Vietnam mindset.

Powell was always an affirmative action pick. His entire career.

So Powell said nothing about foreign policy, he used his time to attack Republicans who back Trump - waste of time. Is he still saying that Saddam has nuclear weapons?

The fact that he voted for Hillary Clinton highlights his personal moral and patriotic corruption, if he ever had any morality and patriotism to begin with.

Anyone who would willingly vote for Hillary Clinton has nothing to stand on. They are dead to me unless they are simply ignorant.

I don’t think he is ignorant. I think he is a Leftist ideologue.

Conservative my a$$.

Oh, it's a hell of an honor. But didn't I always tell you, honey, if I just stayed in place and never spoke up, good things were bound to happen?

Yep, a very apt posting. We rightfully show much respect for the US military and the people who serve, but, also, no one should forget that there is no bigger collection of bureaucratic butt kissers than in the upper officer ranks of the US armed forces.

Colon Bowel is an affirmative-action, life-time a**-kissing loser. Who care what he thinks about anything? His ideas of foreign policy were a dismal failure. Shut up, you degenerate loser!

Powell is the guy who:

  1. Wouldn't go the last mile to take Baghdad once and for all in the first Iraq war.
  2. Lost Turkey as a launching base in the second Iraq war, giving Saddam Hussein the time he needed to caravan his WMD out of the country while the United States had to reroute assets to Basra for a southern-only invasion instead of a north-south pincer squeeze.

I don’t disagree with this latest point you made about Powell during Operation Desert Storm. But it was very clear in the 6 month lead-up (Operation Desert Shield) to the ground war (Operation Desert Storm) that Powell was strongly advocating for an economic and naval blockade of Iraq in lieu of a ground invasion.

Powell “was” a Republican for one reason only: he could get a job in the Reagan White House.
