Howdy, EGC! (((hugs)))

All is well here. It’s cooler and breezy and trying to sprinkle a little bit. Probably won’t rain, but the cool breeze is very refreshing.

Hope you and Gizmo have a wonderful weekend!

The Empire Strikes Back is- IMO- the greatest movie ever made. It has everything-a phenomenal national treasure.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

RICHARD RODGERS

LOVE ME TONIGHT

The Great Depression took its toll on Broadway as it did everything else. The Gershwin brothers, Cole Porter and others debarked for Hollywood to stay employed. Fortunately for all of them, the string of failed movie musicals came to an end, thanks to some smart executives and producers.

With the advent of sound in 1927, Hollywood began producing musical after musical, with Warner Brothers’ “The Jazz Singer,” with Al Jolson, leading the way. Following that major success, Hollywood went overboard with one very expensive musical after another. Eventually that string led to a dead end as these musicals failed at the box office. It looked as though the musical era had ended prematurely.

Then came Pandro Berman and Jack Warner.

In 1933 at RKO, Berman produced “Flying Down to Rio,” a slight comedy featuring the dancing debut of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Thanks to enthusiastic audience reaction and box office receipts, he conceived the idea of featuring Fred and Ginger in a series of musicals written by the composers of the Great American Songbook. Quickly he signed Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and the Gershwin brothers, who boarded trains for Hollywood.

Jack Warner already had Harry Warren under contract since 1925 due to Warner’s acquisition of Vitagraph in Brooklyn. Starting in 1932, Harry and Al Dubin would be put to work for a new series of musicals featuring James Cagney and other hoofers in the Warner Brothers stable.

In 1932, not to be left behind, Paramount entered the fray by hiring Rodgers and Hart. “Love Me Tonight” was a pre-code film, which means that the dialog was racier than would have been allowed after 1934. The film produced three immortals for the songbook.

“ISN’T IT ROMANTIC?“

Thanks to editing, a song could be split between characters in different locations, something not possible on stage. Maurice Chevalier had come from the French music hall with his expertise in both the urbane and comique styles. In this film, he is adorable. This is a clip from the classic. Watch the song ping-pong from one character to another.

This is early Velvet Fog, turning away from jazz and scat singing, to record a sweet and sentimental version from the 1950s.

Odd how the fiddle-playing stands up to the years, but Jeanette’s vocal style...not so much. In my humble opinion, of course.

Jeanette’s style comes from the pre-electric recording era and the opera house where you didn’t have a microphone to embellish your voice. It’s archaic. You’re right.

Fats Waller called him “God.” His piano technique could be ferocious, but here in 1954 he just lays back and works the tune on his own.

I think she knew it was archaic, as she sometimes parodied herself attempting to sing popular music with that voice. I think it was in “San Francisco” or “The Girl of the Golden West”.

Maybe even in “Rose Marie” when she auditioned for a saloon in the Yukon.

A dim memory from the days of my Auntie(RIP) who belonged to the New York chapter of the Nelson Eddy Fan Club.

And one of her fellow opera fans and a good friend is still with us today...and serving in the Trump White House.

A certain New Yorker who once served as Mayor of that great city! :-)

Back when “Opera Quiz” was a regular feature of the Texaco Metropolitan Opera broadcasts, Rudy was an occasional panelist, and he knew his operas cold.

He was conversant with some obscure operas by Vivaldi that had only recently been discovered.

The First Lady of Song traversed the R&H songbook in 1956 backed by Buddy Bregman. This is a sweet intimate take on the tune.

Now that’s news to me! I had no idea that Vivaldi wrote operas.

I once heard some wag say:

“It is said that Vivaldi wrote over 200 pieces.

I think he wrote ONE piece over 200 times!”

I don’t think that’s fair, but it sure is funny!
