In a clear victory for consumer choice, the Trump administration's Department of Energy rolled back Obama-era rules that mandated the use of LED light bulbs.
The Hill:
DOE argued its rule will have little impact given the increasing demand for LED bulbs, which use less electricity than many other types.
“This rule does not prevent consumers from buying the lamps they desire, including efficient options,” the agency wrote in the rule. “The market is successfully transitioning to LEDs regardless of government regulation. Consumers are clearly taking advantage of the energy savings provided by LEDs.”
A senior DOE official told reporters that “concerns may be overstated” and the new rule would not have a large impact on the market.
“This regulation gives consumers more choices, and consumers are better off with more choices,” he said.

One of my professors called them “heat bulbs”.

I used them to keep my various apartment rooms warm. (where the circulated air was not as efficient in certain areas)
AND they provided light. That’s like crazy!
Let me guess. You live somewhere in the northern US where for 9 months of the year waste heat from incandescent lightbulbs is a benefit. There is no way that a pinhead bureaucrat would accommodate that because to them lightbulbs create light and furnaces create heat.
I can see replacing those with low Kelvin LEDs when I run out.
The curly compact fluorescents just plain suck.
I hate them and will never have one in my house.

The patent on incandescent bulbs had long since expired. CFL was protected by patent.
Immelt gave Obama support. Obama facilitated the ban.
That is fascism.
My church saved $80,000 per year on the electric bill by relamping with LED’s. Government force is not needed when the economic impetus is there.
I haven’t bought a regular bulb in years as I have a stockpile in the house.
On the other hand, some lights I have need long lasting LED bulbs. Some are good for 13 years! I found they only last as long as a regular 100 watt bulb.
Yeah, buying bulbs used to be a regular occurrence. Now I don't remember the last time I changed one other than the halogens under the kitchen cabinets. Which is why the lightbulb manufacturers pushed for this.
Just glad we didn’t get stuck with those miserable CFLs.
I do wonder what Friedrich Hayek would say about this whole lightbulb thing, though. LEDs are superior to incandescents yet they probably wouldn’t have been developed if not for the government intervening. Nor do we seem to have suffered much in the way of unintended negative consequences. Is it possible the government’s coercive action has yielded a better net result than if it had stayed on the sidelines?
Yea, now that they have LEDs with various Kelvin ranges, I don’t mind them, the early ones were horrible, too cold and sterile for a home.
I love them - last much longer than the “curly” bulbs.
I buy LED’s because they run far cooler than indandescent, and the light with the GOOD ones is just as good if not better. I live in florida, and not only are you paying money to CREATE all that extra heat, you are paying more to REMOVE that heat. No thanks.
Not all LED bulbs are the same though, find one you like and stick with it. I prefer high CRI with a temp of about 3000k.
I like LEDs and most of my house has them. I opted for bulb life and energy savings by choice and not by mandate. I do not want government telling me I can not buy an incandescent light if I want it. I do have a few, but not many. As my CFL lights die they are replaced by LEDs. Wife person insists on incandescent on her makeup mirror. My bedside lamp is also incandescent. Everything else is LEDs or CFLs.
I don’t know about LEDs but I read the book of info that comes with CFLs and your supposed to let them warm up for 15 minutes before you shut them off, or it kills their lifespan.
LED bulbs are rated in hrs of life. Usually about 20,000. Even if you left the bulb on 24/7 for 6 months it amounts to just 4300 hrs.
I’ve had LED for yrs and just 2 have failed and they were replaced at no charge by the mfg.
Yours is an interesting problem. Perhaps if you called the mfg of the bulb they can help you determine why the bulbs are failing so quickly.

ROTFLMAO! My whole house is LED and I have NEVER had to replace any. They range in age from six months to four years.
The CFLs have mercury, too.
