Great News!
Thanks for the ping
Now for the “fun” part of this in Florida. All of the evacuees coming back.
SC is getting hammered this morning. Reports of widespread power outages. Dorian just won't quit.
We get that dry air from the western Carolinas. Blew out the mosquitoes, no rain and dry air for the weekend. Thanks Dorian!
I’ve got perhaps a strange observation and it might be of interest to follow through and see if animal behavior actually is predictive at all.
I’m at my mom’s in Davie County, North Carolina, near the Yadkin River. It’s very dry here. Prior to today it’s been very sunny, lower than usual humidity and fairly hot in the afternoon but cooler than normal at night. 90 for a high, low 60’s by dawn.
But, the old folk signs for here in the foothills of the Appalachians say that seeing amphibians on high, dry ground means flooding. We’e seen two snapping turtles in the road, uphill from the only lake nearby. The very dry dusty yard is also filled with small frogs.
So, if the critters “know” anything, Dorian is going to make a turn inland bringing heavy rain to the NC foothills. We’re forecast to get breezy, gusts to 30 mph, but outside of the tropical storm warning zone. We may not even get a rain shower, according to current forecast.
I think it’s interesting at least. I’ve heard these old weather signs all my life, my paternal grandparents were farmers. I’ve never encountered such a plain contradiction to test these old sayings, though.
I’m in it now. A few hours ago there was a house fire in Mt Pleasant. One person died.
Still have power but over one hundred thousand don’t. Several area roads are blocked by fallen trees.
Definitely interesting observation. Let us know how it plays out. All sorts of critters were seen heading to higher elevations in advance of Hurricane Katrina. Eery, for sure.
Definitely worse conditions than FL experienced. All best wishes for safe passage. Godspeed. Please check in when you are able.
Neighbor had a sick tree he needed to take down. Hurricane did it for him.
Lucy for him it didn’t hit anything and he has his own chainsaw.
I meant lucky.
The day the hurricane finally lands and can’t find this thread under Breaking News.
Bah, humbug!
Just took a move to the west. Looks to be heading straight for Cape Romain NWR.
Dodging tornadoes this morning near Wilmington
