Hurricane Dorian Live Thread II
NHC/NOAA ^ | 2 September 2019 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/02/2019 7:50:54 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catestrophic Hurricane Dorian was assigned Category 5 status by the NHC Sunday, September 1 at 0800. Since then Hurricane Dorian reached maximum sustained winds of 185 MPH, with gusts exceeding 220 MPH, and storm surge 18-23 feet above normal tide levels as it made landfall across Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Dorian became the strongest hurricane in modern records for the Northwestern Bahamas.

Dorian has wrought extreme wind and flood damage to Abacos and Grand Bahama Island as it crawled slowly across the Northern Bahamas.

All interests along the Atlantic coast should continue monitoring conditions and forecasts as powerful Hurricane Dorian moves very close to the US coastline. Evacuation orders have been issued for many Atlantic coastal communities in the Southeast US. Evacuations include multiple hospitals and nursing homes along the coast with anticipated dangerous storm surge and battering waves.

Wind speed is expected to weaken and fluctuate in the coming days as the storm moves northward.

Can anyone say that how/if this decreased speed may effect/change the storm?

2 effects... that are running counter to one another:
-- as the storm ages, it naturally will increase in overall size.
-- because it's hovering over a land area (albeit not much of one), it will tend to weaken somewhat.

The gotcha here involves just how long it sits and waits before getting going again. Right now the models are assuming a set of facts concerning the atmospherics in the region that are time-constrained. The longer it takes to get his barge moving again, those parameters will change, and thus the forecast could change.

TL;DR version: if it moves on schedule, the models will be right.

Thank you! Plan is to make sure her home has electricity and potable water before driving back to the east coast in a few days. Meanwhile, fixed up a pot of chicken and dumplings for dinner last night. Comfort food is another pre-storm necessity.

Reversal of lanes is now on.

The SCHP flush cars have arrived back in Columbia, SC and the reversal of I-26 from Charleston to Columbia is complete for the noon evacuation order. #Dorian #scwx #sctweets

It depends on the source.

Most codes depend upon simulation models, which use the “Basic Wind Speed” or “V” as a 3-second gust speed at 33 ft (10m) above the ground in Exposure C (say open countryside grasslands with few scattered obstructions less than 30 ft, say over 1500 ft apart.)

Some codes further stipulate design wind speeds must be made by simulation, vice anemometers in hurricane prone regions.

If reported from an anemometer in an suburban or urban area with obstructions such as trees, poles, towers, bldgs, hills over 30 ft, and taken at ground level, then the 10 meter reading might be 30% greater.

Bldgs such as fire departments and police stations are designed for V=150mph generally throughout the east coast, and upwards of 200mph on the southern tip of Florida.
But if you have a short hill on a plain, the wind speed would increase at the top.

With all the options available for up-to-date weather information, it boggles my mind that people would still bother with TWC, which is likely the WORST and lamest source of information for weather.

It's like going to USA Today for hard news.

It's like going to McDonalds for a gourmet meal.

It's like agreeing to a high pressure four-hour time share presentation in exchange for a "free weekend getaway".

How in the world is the water not getting inside that home? Must be built like a ship or a submarine. Windows are portholes. Incredible!

Uh oh. I know Martin Co. FL canceled their evacuations and then had to reinstate them in less than 12 hours.

I saw elsewhere that linemen, etc were staging at Daytona Speedway. Isn’t that awfully close to being affected by Dorian?

If you look closely, I believe there is water on that floor of his home. It’s just hard to discern it. At least to my eyes, it looks like water.

I don’t trust those guys on TWC.

What would the Weather Channel have to do if they couldn’t be out hyping catastrophic weather events?
