Joel McNally: What’s the difference between Tommy Guns and assault weapons? ----(barf alert)
Cap Times ^ | 25 aug 2019 | Joel McNally

Here’s an important question for our times: What’s the difference between a Tommy Gun, the submachine gun wielded by gangsters like John Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson roaming Wisconsin in the 1930s, and a military-style assault weapon, today’s weapon of choice routinely used to commit mass murders all over America?

The answer, of course, is there’s virtually no difference, except for this: President Franklin Roosevelt and the U.S. Congress succeeded in removing Thompson submachine guns, firing 600 rounds of bullets in a minute, from city streets with the National Firearms Act of 1934, the first serious federal gun safety legislation ever passed to protect American lives.

I’ve fired a “grease gun” on a range. It was fun, but it tended to run away and climb, the tank and M-88 tank recovery crew men had them.
I liked my M-16 better, more accurate, easier to control the few times we fired in auto. Plus it had abayonet!

Sturmgewehr 44. The world's first true assault rifle. Developed by Nazi Germany, it was introduced in 1943. https://www.thoughtco.com/world-war-ii-sturmgewehr-44-stg44-2361247

“rounds of bullets”

DO you get those at the Department of Redundancy Department?

Assault weapon is like hate crime, or heat index. Nothing is ever enough on it’s own now. Everything needs a modifier.

The other problem with ay such a rate of fire is it would turn your weapon’s barrel into a white hot noodle.

Anyone remember the APACHE Tommy gun knockoff from 50 years ago? The government clamped down on it when it was found you could make it go full auto if you pulled the trigger AND pressed the trigger at the same time.

Then we should be able to have full-autos, as well, correct? Because that’s not really what I’m hearing when we discuss “assault weapons.”

Why did he reach back and use the tommy gun as a comparator?
Why not use the Uzi as a baseline?

Cause Uzi’s look good in movies but do not fit the narrative

No difference?

To fire, say, 20 rounds, how many times do you have to pul the trigger on:

1) a Thompson SMG?

2) An AR-15?

No difference eh, Joel McNallly, you lying SOS!

Umm.., the founding fathers did that. When they wrote the second amendment the intent was not for hunting or even crime prevention, it is to protect the people from government tyranny.

The fact of the matter is that there is not a politician in Washington, R or D, who would not be happy to see every American dis-armed.

I believe that DiFi arranged to be sworn in as a deputy US Marshal thus allowing to carry in all 50 states and DC. After the trauma of Harvey Milk’s death she realized that ‘leaders’ like her needed to be protected—unlike the peons she supposedly works for.

We better come up with a better argument to keep semi-automatic weapons than “they’re not full auto.”

Arguments are tough against those who operate on “truth” rather than facts.

I think “Tommy Guns” were usually outfitted with 20 to 30 round magazines. Perhaps those 30 rounds could be fired in 5 seconds? (Or whatever). But 600 rounds in 60 seconds?

I’ve fired a Tommy Gun, even with the 50 round drum magazine, at 600 rounds per minute, the Thompson would be empty of rounds within 5 seconds, requiring a magazine replacement. There is no way anyone can achieve 600 rounds per minute. In actual fact, the cyclic rate of fire of a Thompson is about, 800 rounds per minute for model 1921, 750 rounds per minute for the 1927, and 1100 rounds per minute for the 1919 model. For the later, it could burn through 50 rounds in 2.4 seconds. No one could control the gun accurately in full auto due to recoil. It tended to climb up and to the left. What people see on TV and in the Movies are modified guns firing either natural gas or blanks, depending on whether or not they wanted to depict it ejecting spent rounds. Shooting it was and is an expensive thing to do unless the shooter is not paying for the ammunition of the wear and tear on the barrel.

GE powered gatling guns, 200 per three second burst, with three second shut off feature to prevent overheatng the barrels.

Can slow them down to 100/three seconds.

Usually would run out of ammo, and needed a new box hooked up, as the ammo box contained 1500 rounds belted.

of course, having a helicopter to fly it around with makes it easier to carry around.

You can still buy a Tommy Gun... that operates just like an AR-15, one trigger pull = one round down range.

The real submachine gun Thompsons are still available. There are several going up for auction next month and you can buy them (if you reside in a state that recognize the 2nd Amendment correctly) by paying a $250 Federal tax and pass the proctological background check the FBI and ATF will put you through. They sell for between $25,000 and $35,000 (including auction premium), compared to the $2,000 to $2,800 (including auction premium) price the semi-automatic Thompsons sell for which can be purchased in the rest of the states that are not completely insane about the 2nd Amendment such as California where they are banned, because they are “ugly” assault weapon type guns with a pistol type grip and a removable magazine. The semis cannot be converted to fully automatic versions.

Your post is exactly correct, but there was a "C type" drum that held 100 rounds.

Try carrying that around with you. It’s not light with 100 rounds of .45 ACP loaded plus the weight of the Thompson, which was never a light weight gun at 11 pounds without magazine. It’s one advantage was that it helped control the gun’s tendency to climb while shooting due to recoil if firing full auto. Bursts were better controlled.

the tank and M-88 tank recovery crew men had them.

That made it easier to carry enough ammo to feed them. . .

There is demo on YouTube of a guy firing an AR-15 until it, melts down. Surprisingly the barrel did not melt down the receiver did and it took many many magazines to do it. I didn't find the one I had seen but there are quite a few others. How many Rounds to Melt down an AR-15.
