Correlation Between Unemployment and the Minimum Wage ( There is none)
Syracuse University ^ | 10/4/16 | Syracuse University

With the “Fight for $15 External link ” making headlines, opinions abound about whether raising the federal minimum wage will have a positive or negative effect on unemployment rates. Advocates of an increase cite the impossible task of making ends meet on today’s paltry sum of $7.25 an hour and say an increase would have little effect on the overall economy. Those against such a move predict that doing so would cause employers to lay off more and hire less—raising unemployment rates as a result. As is often the case with such emotionally charged issues, especially in an election year, the broader conversation about the minimum wage tends to involve more feeling than historical fact. To balance such a dynamic, we decided to turn to the data to see what it reveals.

The Krotch Bros have made it a project to keep wages low and borders open. I do not consider them left wing.

Yes, people live to meet "their basic needs". /sarcasm

LOL. 99% of people want the best life has to offer. Few achieve it. My contention is if the MW did in fact pay enough for basic needs that would not be enough for 99% of the population. They would still get evacuated and still strive for more. Then again I haven't given up on the American people like the cynical bastard you appear to be.

You said, “Agreed. It is basically feeling good about one’s self by spending someone else’s money.”

How true! I bet the higher up at WalMart are laughing it up like crazy when they get the public to subsidize their employees for them! And McDonalds! And even BizBroker if he is paying some poor schlump minimum wages!

Oh, but WalMart for example, has it so good! Re: cent-va’s video, they increase their bottom line by underpaying their employees, and then increase their top line when those same people spend the food stamps at WalMart! I call that a two-fer!

“Not one chart or raw data in any of those links. I give you facts and data and you give back BS.”

What did I tell you earlier? This is simply an Article of Faith for conservatives. They are in the throes of Cognitive Dissonance. The facts and their beliefs are at sixes and sevens with each other, so they will pile on the BS to try to protect their egos.

hey if you, Walmart employees and anyone don't want to work for wages you feel are beneath you then............don't. It's just that simple, I have no doubt that just like now there will be all sorts of people eager to work to the place of them.

You want to pay people a 'living wage', whatever the hell that means from day to day, then start your own damn business and pay your employees that wage and good luck to you in keeping a customer base at the prices you have to charge to do it.

you can take me off your pings because I'm done, you cite numbers and graphs, I lived reality and trust me your numbers and reality just don't meet.

But you know, on the bright side, unlike the Liberals when they get skunked in an argument, these guys are not going to head for the hills, and call us “Racisssts!” over their shoulders. They might call us something else, but at least not “Racisssts!” or “homophobes!” (smiley face)

Uh, if everybody has to pay the same minimum wage, like they do now, then that means the playing field is level. If you think a business that has to play less than it takes to live, and thus have employees on food stamps, and housing vouchers, to survive, then that does not sound like a sustainable business model to me.

I believe it is Koch. Unless that was humor, then I chuckle :-)

Again, the Koch Brothers political leanings is tangential to the discussion. Stay on point please.

Where is the constitutional (and moral) justification for the government telling people what they have to pay for anything? Hiring an employee is no less a contractual agreement than buying a car.

Would you agree that the government should set a minimum price for a car if it was purported to have no negative effect on car sales? Don't [bad] salesmen deserve a "living wage"?

Where do you draw the line? Seriously, when do you stop guaranteeing things to some people that other must pay for against their will? That's the key to making everything a "right". There can be no line, it just goes on forever...well until the producers throw in the towel & it collapses under its own weight. That's carrying it to its logical conclusion.

Golly gee, why don't you follow some logic here, if everybody, are you really saying everybody or did you actually mean all minimum wage workers? Anyway if every minimum wage person was suddenly jumped to $15 what exactly do you think will happen to prices across the board? What do you think will happen with all those people that worked hard to get to that $15 on their own? What happens with skilled trades apprentices that are at or just above that $15? Do you think other wages and prices will just freeze no matter what happens to minimum wages?

Think of Newtons third law, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, wages go up and prices go up, wages go up and taxes go up, with the end result being that those people with their shiny new living wages really aren't all that much better off with higher rent, food costs, gas, utilities, etc., etc., etc.

Oh yeah think of all those people that don't get that lovely wage increase but do get the price increases, people like pensioners and seniors on social security.

Level playing field my A...

Like I said the GOP will always struggle to get a majority even with the left so weak, feckless and off the rails. The min wage issue is just one example of GOP ham handed tone deaf politics. The GOP "base" is about 8 million small businessmen owners, Libertarians, corporate globalist elites and Wall Street. I'd estimate it is about 10 million strong. The rest of the people that vote for GOP candidates hold their nose while doing so.

The GOP struggles still, why?

I am preparing a thread that shows no historical correlation either way( up or down ) between inflation and raising the minimum wage. It will contain facts, graphs and data so nobody will read it nor try to understand it.

I've seen instances where employers have to pay above minimum wage to get competent help. Is the increasing minimum wage causing a greater move to automation? Certainly. Anything that raises labor costs encourages innovation. But the other variable driving automation is the poor quality of our available labor force. Confer with an employer and discover how bad it really is.

Still, not relevant to the point.

We live in a constitutional republic. The Constitution is the ultimate law of the land, NOT the supreme court or any other branch. Where are you constitutionally justified in taking from me against my will and giving to someone else. That is just what mandated wages are. You are using the power of government to confiscate my earnings. But that's OK because you're not keeping it, you're giving it to someone else that you deem deserving.

Ultimately, in the final analysis, the government's power comes from the point of a gun.

Yes, what a vote getter for the GOP:

"Due to poor quality of our available labor force we need to import labor and automate! Vote for us!!!"

Let's get back to the point. You can extol the lack of morality and virtue of Republicans at another time. When it's relevant to the discussion.

Where in the Constitution (a document which LIMITS the power of government) do you see the right to force one person to pay more than he desires for a product? Your labor, be it mental or physical, is the product you are selling to an employer as a potential employee.
