Texas Republicans bracing for a Blue Wave in 2020. Yes, Texas
The New Republic ^

When Beto O’Rourke proclaimed, during the second round of Democratic presidential debates, that “there’s a new battleground state, Texas, and it has 38 Electoral College votes,” eyes rolled in unison across America. We’ve all heard that nonsense before! Pundits and progressives have been predicting that minority-white Texas would go blue for so long, it’s practically become a running joke. And while O’Rourke came tantalizingly close to knocking off Ted Cruz last fall, that race seemed to have all the hallmarks of a fluke—a Republican senator who even Republicans can’t stomach, running in a strong Democratic midterm cycle against a fresh-faced liberal who eschewed all forms of conventional political wisdom and ran a campaign so novel, so tireless, and so perfectly made for social media that it became a viral sensation. Post-Betomania, most people assumed that Texas Democrats would resume their role as American politics’ saddest underachievers, while Texas Republicans extended their quarter-century run of dominance as their national party’s ideological, financial, and electoral-vote stronghold.

Cruz also ran a terrible low-energy campaign with many, many missteps. He got started late, continued to piss off his supporters in the early parts (he made them pay for campaign signs in an evident attempt to make a profit) and basically didn’t fix these and other problems (”I’m Ted Cruz! You should vote for me! Thanks!” being his entire message for a while) until October. Trump had to come bail his arse out.

Not really. If the Republicans in Texas run crappy campaigns that take their voters for granted, it’s possible for this to happen. There is also a new issue in Texas GOP leadership - the (R) Speaker of the House got caught on tape conspiring to get media to perform massive hit jobs on certain fellow Republican legislature members in order to make them fail of election/re-election in exchange for access to him.

Not in 2020.

Beto LOST in the most favorable year for Democrats in years.

The NEW Republic is a left wing fantasy rag.

Re: Unfortunately, the people fleeing California voted Democrat in California...

That depends on ethnicity.

In 2012, in California, white voters supported Romney 53-45.

I can't find Trump's 2016 California numbers (behind a pay wall).

Politically, Texas has two problems.

At least 30% of registered voters are Hispanic.

And, a significant bloc of white Texas voters still favor Populist Democrats (LBJ) and center-left Republicans (John Connally).

They cheer it because they are Neocon Trotskyists - globalists - not real Republicans.

I knew California would be lost in 1986, when Reagan betrayed his adopted state. He gave the RINOs the template for surrender.

I think you got the second paragraph sort of right.
The evolution of high tech did bring liberals to
the Silicon Valley. But the Bay Area was already thick
with liberals compared to much of California. I’m
a 4th generation Californian and for years the
Californians I have witnessed moving elsewhere leave
because many urbanites retire and moved to the nicer
rural areas of the the state. They brought their
liberalism with them and crowded out the more
conservative locals.

Those rural Californians who were not forced out by
retired urbanites and suburbanites didn’t want to deal
with the increasingly liberal state government with
more regulations and taxes so they split the state
for places like Idaho.

The increased taxes and regulations also drove businesses
away from California and states like Texas led by
Governor Ricky-boy recruited lots of businesses away.
I suspect that some of the liberalization of Texas
is the result of California liberals and liberals
from other states moving there with their companies.
The point here is that those who leave California are
not ALL liberals and that some of the problems in
Texas are self inflicted

The level of voter fraud would have to be astronomical to turn Texas blue. Not going to happen.

Illegals got Colorado and New Mexico as well. Arizona and Texas may be next.

The Americans themselves are the ones refusing to breed; the borders wouldn’t be open if more Americans had families. There are many reasons they don’t, and the open borders will be the destruction of this country, but the fact is we’re not producing enough “American” voters.

It is not people fleeing CA-those that do are conservative for the most part and its a relatively small number. What is going on in Texas as it did in CA, Colorado, Nevada and elsewhere is the increasing demographic or ethnic block voting for Dems- fueled by the increasing Hispanic voters from illegals. Hispanics vote 70% for dems on average. The numbers are huge. Hispanic population was up 1.2 million last year according to Census and that probably understates illegals-and most of it Southwest states. It’s the main reason Cruz had a tighter race in Texas.

Just look at the states won by Trump,he won 32 states but only 4 have a population of Hispanic voters over 13%. Only 4. Clinton by contrast won 28 states and only 5 had a Hispanic population of under 13%.

Colorado is now over 20% Hispanic and now a dem state, Nevada over 29% and voting blue. I believe this is why the dems are for illegal immigration-it gets them votes and power.

That is the real story, and challenge for GOP. Without the block voting of African American’s (93% + for Dems+ and especially Hispanic Americans-approaching 70%,) CA would still be the state that elected Reagan governor and nationally the Dems would have a little over 100 seats and about 10-12 Senate seats. At Least Hispanics don’t vote 90% dems

In CA, the Hispanic Population is now about 40% (and yes fueled by illegal immigrants and higher birth rate )and African American 12%.

We need to address, I think Trump can and does, otherwise its like trying to win a basketball game where the other team gets to start with a 20 point lead so we cannot pretend we can win without Hispanics or fall for the “its just white liberals” myth or the entire country will be CA

As mentioned above the U.S. Hispanic population surged another 1.2 million last year and now is a record 59.9 million, according to newly released U.S. Census Bureau population estimates.
The percentage of Hispanics as part of the overall U.S. population also jumped to 18%. -tough to win when you get 5 million and they get 13 million.

The Open Border GOPe, along with the socialists, have nearly completed their work. The looming electoral college collapse is as predictable as April showers in the Spring.

DJT won TX by 9pts in 2016.

Romney won Texas by 16 points in 2012.

Yeah, well, we knew that would be the case when those demons in the 70s SCOTUS legalized infanticide. If we didn't, we should have.

Negative population growth among Americans = diminishing work force = need for lax immigration.

Now it's a Perfect Storm for America's demise.
