The White House is closely monitoring a situation described by an administration official as a congregation of Chinese forces on Hong Kongs border, according to a report Tuesday.
The reason for the buildup, which includes the Chinese military or armed police, was not clear but came amid violent protests in the region, Bloomberg reported.

How ya ll like that idea of bridges and highways...
Slaughtering people in one of the biggest cities in China will not work out well for them in the eyes of the other Chinese.
There is no reason Hong Kong should be under PRC sovereignty.
It was a dirty trick played on Hong Kong.
Yeah, signing a 99 year lease, and actually having both sides honor the terms is a real trick. /S
“They never asked to be under ChiCom rule.”
Thy didn’t have a choice. They are lucky they got the deal they did.
“One party has broken it, the ChiComs, it is therefore an international issue. UK in fact has an obligation to address it.
Good luck with that.
THE WORLD IS WATCHING
Tienanmen Square all over again - commies never want to give up their power and will murder and institute tyranny to retain it.
They didn’t sign a lease with the PRC.
I am so sad for the people of Hong Kong.
Once they crush HK, then the might decide that the time has finally arrived to “reclaim” Taiwan.
[I suppose, in a western way of thinking, there isnt any reason for China to send troops. But this is China and they already have had several senior government officials basically saying that troops are ready to hit the ground but just need HKs approval. Besides, China doesnt do anything without a reason.]
Re sanctions - the sanctions on China after Tiananmen Square were mild, and business as usual, except for defense-related items, resumed in a few short years. That was at a time when China was a nit in the global economy - it exported little and imported little. Now that it is a major market for many countries (including Hollywood, for which it is one of the biggest foreign markets with almost $800m worth of foreign revenues*), it would take serious political will to impose major sanctions on China over the killing of a few thousand protestors.
Man what a waist that was...
All those human livers China could have exported later to the US for profit!
To bad Clinton wasn’t president yet to make the deal... What a hardship the government had to endure, not being able to make a profit, or get missile and satellite tech or something.
I mean really, can you blame that poor totalitarian government for later paying good money to get Clinton/Gore elected!
That poor government getting put through all that. /S
That’s cute, but irrelevant.
Once the UK recognized the PRC as the legitimate government of China, all treaties passed to them.
Not to mention that China could virtually cut the place off if they wanted if the UK just decided to ignore the end of the lease. Their beef with how the place was obtained was very real, and they were not going to just shrug their shoulders at the whole thing.
So what do you want to do, go to war? Stop receiving televisions in exchange for little pieces of paper?
The British created this problem for people who seem essentially Chinese to me. Let those folks deal with it.

Met a college student friend of my collegue back in the 80s who said the movie Reds was “so inspiring...”
probably cried when the Berlin wall and soviet union fell.
“Hong Kong Independence was possible when the Brits gave it back. Not now. Was stupid then and it is now.”
It wasn’t - China was already far too strong at that point, and I remember their negotiations with the UK - no matter what protections the UK came up with, China would not agree to anything that questioned their ultimate authority over the Hong Kong - that was a non-starter for them, totally out of the question. They would have needed to be liberated from the UK prior to WW2, before Mao took over (as happened with Taiwan). Remember, Mao fought us to a draw in Korea, there was no way he was going to let Hong Kong get cut loose and independent.
I’ll be back over to Saigon, Q-8, No later than the 5th of October. But, do I ever hate that second leg 13 hour flight from either Dallas or Chicago after leaving EVV.
Looking forward to seeing the wife’s kin folks. I’ll avoid any airline carriers that go through Hong Kong because of the ‘dust-up’ in HK.
The difference between now and 1989 is
that the US has a POTUS who won’t stand idly by
and let the ChiComs run over their own people with tanks
in the name of preserving cheap labor.
With the same result. So why should I care about a bunch of Chinese killing another bunch of Chinese, it’s not like they haven’t been doing it for more than 3,000 years... actually, I don’t.
I agree he won’t ignore what happens there, but no president, not even Reagan back in his day, would be able to reverse China’s military takeover of Hong Kong, if China chose to do so.
Trump will hit them in other ways...economic, maybe military action in some other area, maybe giving/selling some serious hardware to Taiwan. So, yes, it will be interesting.
They reached their 1000 mile sea lane patrol radis in strength back in the 90’s.
One country, two systems; for 50-years. This needs to be broadcast worldwide everywhere. China is flexing her muscles again. Things will only get bloody in HK. It is entirely possible that those armed atolls might become overrun as a response from the US, the Philippines, etc.
