Watching the Moon landing 50 years ago from his comfortable Paris home, Yves Beon could barely contain himself at the spectacle unfolding on TV.
Dozens of white-shirted scientists and engineers at the Apollo Mission Control Center in Houston, Texas, were on their feet, many waving flags, cheering at a triumph that was enhancing American prestige and unleashing an ocean of apple-pie patriotism.
Yet Beon, a hero of the French Resistance, was spitting venom at the screen that night and, had he been alive to see last week’s documentaries repeating the footage of Neil Armstrong’s ‘giant leap for mankind’, his reaction would have been incandescent.
Amid the jubilation half a century ago, no one bothered to point out that America’s scientists had been given a huge helping hand. Or that the Moon landing was, in fact, the brainchild of German scientists led by Wernher von Braun, Kurt Debus and Arthur Rudolph. Or that all three were Nazi war criminals, guilty of mass murder.

Several things in this article are wrong.
Firstly Von Braun was never some kind of nazi ideologue. If you wanted to work in rocketry you had to join the party. The same was true from train conductors and some other professions. There was never any evidence he was responsible for Dora or any of the slave labor camps in which V2 components were produced. Some of the others were not as innocent.
Still, what were we supposed to do? If we didn’t snap them up and use them to bolster our defense capabilities, it was a certainty the Soviets would - and they hoovered up their share of German scientists and engineers too. We had a cold war to win. We were willing to make a deal with the Commies to win WWII. Where’s the crying about that?

He didn’t oversee the camp. He did visit and knew what conditions were like, but he didn’t run it and its not like he was in any position to stop it.
So tell us, all knowing one, how long did the SS lock von Braun up before he finally became a full-fledged, signed-on-the-dotted-line Nazi?

Are you aware of ANY other history concerning von Braun beyond the ‘story’ you posted?
I didn’t read anything but accusations. Even war crimes must be proven with evidence. Not every Nazi was a war criminal. We didn’t hang every German soldier. Nor did we prosecute VW, Mercedes Benz or Krupp. Or Japanese industrialists.

Von Braun invented a new rocket motor design that could scale up to the Saturn V in size.
The very same design is in use today worldwide.
He was a giant, and nobody since has come close.

Von Braun was a member of the SS.
Story was he had to join but other reports said he wore his SS uniform quite frequently and appeared to like it. There are pics out on the web.
