Watching the Moon landing 50 years ago from his comfortable Paris home, Yves Beon could barely contain himself at the spectacle unfolding on TV.
Dozens of white-shirted scientists and engineers at the Apollo Mission Control Center in Houston, Texas, were on their feet, many waving flags, cheering at a triumph that was enhancing American prestige and unleashing an ocean of apple-pie patriotism.
Yet Beon, a hero of the French Resistance, was spitting venom at the screen that night and, had he been alive to see last weeks documentaries repeating the footage of Neil Armstrongs giant leap for mankind, his reaction would have been incandescent.
Amid the jubilation half a century ago, no one bothered to point out that Americas scientists had been given a huge helping hand. Or that the Moon landing was, in fact, the brainchild of German scientists led by Wernher von Braun, Kurt Debus and Arthur Rudolph. Or that all three were Nazi war criminals, guilty of mass murder.

Every single bit of all this putting down what the USA accomplished 50 years ago is because we have a President who cares about the country...
If a democrat was president, we would be hearing accolades and songs and ceremonies every day, day in and day out, about the glorious moon landing...
Huh?
[Werner Von Braun had an autobiography ghost written so that he and the other German scientists would become more acceptable to the public, I Aim for the Stars. An English comedian added the subtitle ...But Sometimes I Hit London.]
Von Braun wanted to put men on the moon with his rockets - not make war. There’s a reason that they all defected, and I don’t think impending punishment was it. Hitler and his Generals saw the military applications and went with them, which was short-sighted. One would think that with his lust for the grandiose, Hitler would have had Goebbels begin advertising that they were going to launch men into space. That would have terrified many. They started working on those rockets much sooner than most people think.
Refugees. Both escaped Jewish oppression before the war started. Had Hitler not begun murdering Jews, he might have had the atomic bomb before we did.
We always wonder after those life occasions where we did nothing, whether for prudence or cowardice or inertia or simply for want of a clear direction in the moment, if we should have done something, anything.
Some it gnaws on, some cope and go on to do greater things.
Well heck. Better than Stalinist commie monsters or Commie Maoist monsters
Hitler was the monster not Von Braun
Somebody has Space envy.
Obviously the Brits still are pissed off about the V2.
“Von Braun aimed for the stars, but occasionally hit London”
You are delusional. You over look the team of rocketeers at Ames Research Center who had Ben working on rockets with no help from Von Braun.
This is the typical propaganda to dis American scientist that is floated every now and again. We poor stupid Americans brought over Nazi scientists because we couldnt do it ourselves. Well boyo the Russians took their fair share and havent done as well
Why do you want to dis the US
Precisely
So - we succeeded in landing on the moon and developing Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles because we captured and used Nazi scientists, to counter the Soviets who were using their own captured Nazi scientists.
Meanwhile, the Brits benefitted from our nuclear umbrella - which largely resulted from our use of Nazi monsters.
Further, Nazi research helped us develop higher-flying, faster aircraft - and to break the « sound barrier ». The Brits benefitted again.
They should be grateful - but its not in their nature.
bump
Every and any person with brains ran from the Russians and towards the Americans as NAzi Germany collapsed around them. The lucky ones made it to the American or British lines.
And as you said, our Nazi Scientists were better that the Russians Nazi Scientists.
To the victors go the spoils!
Homosexual Alan Turing cracked the Nazi encryption only with the help of Polish agents.
In June of 1971, when I was 9, I came in for lunch and a man who I didn’t know was sitting with my father at the kitchen table. My father stood up and Introduced me to “Doctor Von Braun”. and I shook his hand and walked away not knowing who he was and thinking little of it.
The story is that my father was project director for the ERTS satellite at Bendix in Ann Arbor. Dr Von Braun was visiting for the day and my dad invited him home for lunch. He later told be that Dr. Von Braun very much appreciated the home cooked food because he ate out so much.
Goddard did create the first liquid-fuel rocket, but it wasn’t a guided missile -
that’s what made the V-2 unique, it was the first rocket that had a 3-dimensional control system, the R-7 ...
plus, it was the first BIG liquid-fuel rocket, so scaling-up problems had to be solved that Goddard didn’t have to face
Great Contrast between Capitalism and Socialism
Socialists put these men to work committing war crimes
Capitalism put these men to work exploring God’s Creation
Lets start talking about all the africans and muslims that were selling blacks to the slave traders. You kmow the blacks they didnt kill in tribal wars, conquest, etc.
