A magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Kern County in California on Friday evening -- just a day after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that was the largest temblor in the region in two decades, the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed.
Shaking on Friday evening was felt as far away as Las Vegas and Los Angeles and into northern Mexico. The USGS said there was a 5 percent chance a larger quake could still follow.
The newest earthquakes epicenter was about 10 miles north-northeast of Ridgecrest, Calif., about 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles, in the same area where Thursday's quake occurred. The Ridgecrest area has had more than 100 aftershocks since Thursday's earthquake and experts warn there could be more to come.

That’s a negative, sir. Do not, repeat not, run out of the building.
GET AWAY FROM THE BUILDING!
Earthquakes don't kill people, buildings kill people!
ASAP is a key, it's P when stuff isn't or stops shedding from the outer walls. Running out into a waterfall of brick or roofing tiles is a bad move. Safer crouched next to a desk or stout workbench.
Always a judgement call, running the occasional 'what if' scenario helps, just like always knowing where the exits are in a public space in case of fire or worse is a good idea.
Still, when it's your time, it's your time.
Just don't make it easy for our no-nosed friend with the scythe...
Trust me, that's next. First distribute the money he gets from President Trump to his cronies in the Unions and demonicRAT run bureaucracies and THEN raise taxes.
“A 7.1 is a pretty significant quake. Hope all are okay.”
Amen!
That puts all the previous hype of the 3. quakes into perspective.
That was indeed an Impressive earthquake the Loma Prieta quake of 1989
I was on the third floor of a building buildings and earthquake shelter at 1908 known as Barrington hall the time as a Berkeley student
to wait the entire building shook one way and then the other and then the other and handled it perfectly
Minutes later we saw the entire Marina district on fire in SF across the bay and rotor bikes down to see where this freeway had collapsed over the cypress in Oakland it was quite a scene
San Francisco giants and the Oakland As were playing in the World Series in San Francisco and the game was just about to start at the time I believe it was October 19 about 5 PM
Just talked to my wife in Long Beach (I’m in FL for work). She said it was less than an “A” ticket ride for her but it did last a while.
A 7.1 rattles your nerves for weeks, i know first hand, had one hit my home last December here 11 miles north of Wasilla, Alaska. Still repairing damages to many, many homes.
Get out of the building ASAP dont wait.
My hometown, Long Beach, Cal., had a big quake in 1933. Lots of ornamental storefronts came crashing down. So building regs were changed to eliminate the threat. But here in the Midwest, there are lots of old buildings with features that will come down, and a lot of brick buildings that don’t fare well in earthquakes. If a New Madrid level quake hits, St Louis and Memphis will have catastrophic damage. Earthquakes here cover much longer distances than in California.
But I won’t fault anyone who gets out ASAP!
Every. Single. Time.
Did you see the photos of the crushed cars? I couldn't help but notice the vast majority were crushed under a concrete support beam directly across the front seat. I think the deeply ingrained training to get in a doorway kicked in and the support beams were the closest thing to doorways available.
Minor point of order, attempts to ban ornamental cornices and assorted bric-a-brac had been going on for decades prior to the 1933 'quake.
It wasn't until the 'quake forcibly removed the gewgaws, killing a bunch of people in the process that they were finally able to pass the laws and regulations.
It's like trying to get a traffic signal on a dangerous intersection. No body, no signal.
temblor? Shouldn’t it be TREMBLOR?
In a rational world, yes.
We don’t live there.
Temblor, Noun (plural temblors or temblores)
(chiefly US) An earthquake.
From Latin American Spanish temblor.
By all means run out and get away from all strictures.
Heres my surreal experience: I went to college in Santa Clara. Working graveyard in the middle of the night at 7 11. I was out sweeping the parking lot. No traffic, no noise. I actually heard a quake coming. Heard the rumble in the distance, heard it get louder and louder, shaking for 10 seconds or so, then I could hear it roll away. It was only about a 3 or 3.5. Seriously cool experience and I doubt there are many who have experienced it
So now Newsome appeals to Trump for help after bad mouthing him endlessly.
For people who live where there are unreinforced masonry structure (like in the vicinity of the New Madrid quake), that may not work. Problem is, the building can come down faster than you can come away.
The women killed in Paso Robles mentioned below actually died near the door as they ran out. (I was up at Camp Roberts off and on in that same general time frame and had gthe opportunity to see the cleanup underway while passing through Paso Roble, so the incident sticks in my mind) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_San_Simeon_earthquake#Damage
It is, particularly eastern Kern County, where the shaking was going on. However, for some reason, Bakersfield keeps sending RINOs to Congress going back to Bill Thomas in the 1980's.
Yep. Happening pretty much on top of NAWS, China Lake. An update has been posted to their Facebook page.
