VP Pence was called back to the WH to deal with an emergency. He was on AF2, going to an event in Salem NH. The event has been cancelled.
The incident is believed to have occurred off Russia’s northern shore in the Barents Sea on Monday, but the MoD has not specified.
The submarine was towed to the Russian North Fleet headquarters in Severomork and an investigation is underway, according to the news agency.

I don't think President Trump would recall the Vice President mid-flight to do this.
A Russian sub accident one day ago is not going to be a reason for the Vice President to turn his plane around minutes before his destination.

I read his book. There was much confusion at the time and Haig was the senior ranking official in the White House at that time. VP was out of touch and couldn’t be reached. Technically, he was in charge and rightfully so.
