ATF agents across the country have been working to track down thousands of guns and firearms parts that had been seized by law enforcement and were supposed to be destroyed but were stolen first, according to sources familiar with the effort.

The agents are searching for some of their own retired service weapons as well as guns from other federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and DEA.

All of the weapons had been sent to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' National Firearms and Ammunition Destruction Branch in Martinsburg, West Virginia, to be shredded, according to court documents and congressional letters.

A longtime guard at the ATF facility has admitted to carting off thousands of firearms, gun parts and ammunition and selling them over several years.

The Hapless ATF strikes again. Thousands of seized guns were either stolen, or their parts were taken then sold off. Included among the missing firearms: Full auto machine guns.

Thank goodness the ATF banned bump stocks, though.

It was either an inside thing or some one in another agency caught wind of all those pieces. Bottom line, it wasn’t an “outsider”.

Wonder if I can get a pile of shredded guns so when they come and try to take mine, I just point to the pile and say, there they are.

Australian Gun laws were largely aligned in 1996 by the National Firearms Agreement. In 2 federally funded gun buybacks and voluntary surrenders and State Governments' gun amnesties before and after the Port Arthur Massacre were collected and destroyed, more than a million firearms, possibly 1/3 of the national stock.

Gubmint shouldn’t be destroying guns anyway.

If improperly seized, give ‘em back.

If properly taken, sell ‘em. Cheap.

Yeah. Free guns that “just disappear”. Sure, I believe that. Back when I used to own guns I’d sometimes open the safe and poof! They’d be gone. That’s why I gave all mine to an itinerant gypsy junk dealer who forgot to give me a receipt. I feel much safer now.

It was an inside job, per the article and except above:

“A longtime guard at the ATF facility has admitted to carting off thousands of firearms, gun parts and ammunition and selling them over several years.”

So we have 1) a deliberate criminal act; and 2) a leadership/management and procedural failure of the first order. This guy should have been caught through inventory and auditing control measures years ago.
