The U.S. and Mexico failed to reach a deal on immigration issues during their Wednesday meeting.

Officials met just days before 5% tariffs on all Mexican imports are set to kick in, while President Donald Trump was in the U.K. on a state visit. Trump announced the tariffs in a surprise tweet last Thursday, saying they would be imposed “until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP.”

On Wednesday evening, Trump tweeted that “progress is being made, but not nearly enough!” The president said talks will continue on Thursday and that if no deal is reached then tariffs will begin on Monday.

25% reduction of trade will cause

I am not sure a 25% tariff equates to a 25% reduction in goods traded.

BTW, I’m seeing a figure of about 270-290 Billion a year. That’s based on the following article which makes reference to 2016. I haven’t found more current figures.

https://www.investopedia.com/articles/insights/012717/how-much-does-us-import-mexico-gm-f.asp

If that figure is accurate, we’d be taking in about 1 Billion a month at 5%, 2 Billion a month at 10%, etc.

He should let congress know, that if they pass a bill to override his tariffs on mexico, that he will be left with no other recourse than to shut down the border completely.

As a comparison $2B is 12 hours of DEFICIT spending. It’s not that much money. Insignificant.

Actually you are wrong. Rush is not a Globalist even though you don’t like him. Second, here is his statement from June 5 during a 5 minute discussion on the subject:

“So it’s just more of the same, and it’s a shame. I don’t know how serious Trump was on the tariffs. He probably meant it and means it regarding Mexico. The thing is, the Senate can’t stop him. The president can impose tariffs. He doesn’t have to go through the Senate for a vote, so there is no overriding veto or any of that. The president can slap a tariff on anybody he wants, and all they can do from the peanut gallery is yell and scream about it — and they’re trying to convince him not to do it. But they can’t stop him, so it’s not really serious undermining of the position. But it’s not helping”.

“Mexico already got the word from Congress that they will stop Trump”

Actually you don’t know that and as many have said the votes are not there to stop him and others yet have said Trump is well within his authority to do do this and he cannot be stopped by the Congress unless the change the laws.

Thankfully this president is not afraid of the Congress and will do what it takes to keep his promises. If it means pissing off his own Party then so be it.

That statement you posted was not an endorsement of tariffs or protectionism in any way. Rush was an anti “Trumpist” during most of 2016 when we really needed him. He is now pretending to have been pro Trump all along. Rush is Free Traitor™, it’s in his DNA. He is stuck in the 1980’s.

Who are “half of the Republicans voting for no tariffs”? I have not seen such a list or even a mention of one. I did read here 3-4 were against it but that is not near enough to overturn a veto.

That aside Trump is well within his authority to initiate the tariffs.

While they are talking POTUS should call the Border and tell them that Kentucky and South Dakota have plenty of room to temporarily house a few hundred thousand illegals and to send them there immediately.

The Mexican tariff is a tax on Americans. Every cent collected is payed by Americans buying Mexican produced products. The tariffs are collected by US customs as the goods cross the border.

The Mexicans are not paying the money. Americans are paying

Agree. It is a relatively small amount.

All the more reason to bypass the 5% tariff. :)

Americans are paying>>>>>

Thats not true in what we know about the China tarriffs. Look at Walmart prices on good brought in by Walmart from China. The tarrrifs are over 10% in some cases, yet Walmart prices have only gone up 2% since the China tarrifs were put in place.( All reported by John Bachelor on his radio prpgram.)

No, the American consumer will not be paying extra, because there is price competition at the consumer end.The Mexicans and the corporations will pay, or lose business by raising prices.

Do not buy this leftist, progressive Repblican talking point. All of them are squeeling precisely becasue their lobbyist corporations AND Mexico will pay, the lobbyists foll the Senates campaign coffers, and the Senate does not speak for Americans.

We, the ordinary people, deserve relief from the invasion in progress on our Southern border. President Trump has it exactly right, and Mexico will indeed pay for a wall otherwise unless they stem the tide.

Count on it.

President Trump is right on with this.

Once Mexico has fallen, the rest will give up. If Mexico wins, we have no future.

***************

That’s it in a nutshell. If we can’t push Mexico to accede to our demands then nobody else will. We cannot afford to appease Mexico at our expense. This is a must win situation.

Tariffs on China goods will be paid to US customs before they are permitted entry

Never said that. What I said it that Rush is not a globalist. He and Hannity have done more to fight against the Liberals and support Trump in his actions than any other persons. Since you don’t like Rush, nothing will change your mind.

Back to the original statement. Congress can not override the tariffs unless they pass a bill to change the power of the presidency. That will not have a chance of passing. So in essence, Congress can do nothing to stop the tariffs except to support China and Mexico and de-rail the talks.

That falsely assumes that the entire amount of the tariff is passed on to the consumer. That’s a false assumption. As an example, look at the example of GM that was in the news this past week. They have been paying the tariff on the SUV they import from China, and have not raised the selling price here in America. They have absorbed the price, not the consumer. But it is having an effect on their bottom line, which is the intended purpose. So, no. Your statement is wrong.

I wasn’t suggesting we could pay off the debt with the money. Just interested in seeing how long it would take to cover the cost of the wall. Two or three months by my estimate. And, yes I get that the more important issue is how effective this will be at getting Mexico to stop the illegals. But paying for the wall would be a nice bonus.

And, I disagree that these tariffs will have no effect on Mexico’s behavior, especially once/if they go up to the higher percentages. Five billion a month in tariffs (the amount they will pay once/if the tariffs rise to 25%) is not insignificant when you consider the effect it has cumulatively on corporate profits. And that’s the main point of the tariffs - not to pay off the deficit, but to cause pain to companies that export from Mexico to U.S. so that they will either pressure the Mexican government to stop the illegals, or will consider shifting their production back to the U.S., or both.

Here are the figures. $135 = amount imported from Mexico per year. 5% = amount of tariff. Therefore for the amount collected is 5% of $135B = $6.75B Which is not enough for the wall.
