Good news, but an example of bad journalism. Rare earth processing plants in Colorado and California were run out of business by China and Clinton’s insane EPA in the 90’s.

The last non-China processor in Malaysia closed in 2012 because they could not compete with China’s subsidized pricing...

God Bless Texas!

If the United States ever devolves into civil war and breaks up, and I hope it does NOT, then I would wish my home state of Alabama to become part of the Greater Texas Hegemony.

Seems like a strange place to put it considering most of the Rare Earths are in CO, UT and NV.
Transportation cost would doom it

The Chinese employ standard mercantilist practices to drive competitors out of the business — low prices when a competitor tries to enter the market and high gouging prices when they have the market to themselves.

Tariff the hell out of the Chinese!

Why we ever gave China the edge on these rare earth metals, I’ll never know. Just plain stupid.

There was a report on FR yesterday that Japan has found a “rare earths” deposit on one of their island.

Happy days are here again.

I loved their 45 hit, “Get Ready”.

Australia’s Lynas (OTCPK:LYSCF) says it signed a memorandum of understanding with Texas-based Blue Line Corp. to build the first rare earths separation plant in the U.S. in years.

The companies say their proposed joint venture, which would be majority owned by the Australian miner, would focus on separating heavy rare earths such as dysprosium and terbium, and would be the only large-scale producer of medium and heavy rare earths outside China.

Lynas CEO Amanda Lacaze says the U.S. venture will complement its operations in Malaysia while also closing a “critical” supply chain gap for U.S. manufacturers.

Yes. Mountain Pass rare earth mine in California is operating now. MP Materials resumed mining and refining operations in January 2018.

rare earth processing facilities are enormously dirty and polluting. In order to comply with existing EPA regulations, the cost to process the ore and materials will be much, much more expensive than what is coming out of China.

What does that mean?

[1] That the USA will be able to process rare earth materials . Yay!

[2] That they will be many, many, many times more expensive than their Chinese competition. Boo!

[3] Components and products utilizing American processed rare earth components will be much more expensive than the Chinese versions. Perhaps by a factor of 10x to 20x . Yuck!
