Rare earth elements are used every day. They are metals that are used in everything from cell phones to cars, televisions, military jet engines and medical devices.

However, the tit-for-tat trade Opens a New Window. war between the U.S. and China, Opens a New Window. may present a challenge to the industry which heavily relies on China. The retaliatory tariffs from China on $60 billion worth U.S. goods goes into effect this weekend.

Blue Line Corp., a chemical company based in Texas, is the first and only company outside of China that can process small batches of rare earth. They just partnered with Australian rare earths mining company Lynas to build a processing facility in the U.S.

Seeing as how the REM mine we have currently functioning sends its raw ore to China for processing, I think transportation costs would actually be lower than the current “arrangement”.

[Why we ever gave China the edge on these rare earth metals, I’ll never know. Just plain stupid.]

Their edge is no environmental restrictions for rare earths processing. The ores are not rare, but processing them in a way that doesn’t involve just dumping the waste in a landfill is more expensive than current prices for the minerals justify. And those prices are basically set by China, the low cost provider. It’s kind of a reverse OPEC situation. OPEC tries to set a really high price, whereas China sells at a really small premium to their already bottom of the barrel costs. We could ban Chinese rare earths, but American manufacturers would have to pay a premium, and that would affect the prices of the final products that those minerals are used to manufacture.

He is especially conspiratorial in that video.

Personally I think Mercury is probably worse than Manganese since it’s being mentioned.

It’s pretty bad when there are people that thought he was a genius.

Up on stage, Cornel West, Donna Brazile and Tavis Smiley.

Bill Clinton needed the money for his reelection campaign so he closed the plants and the mines - one is now a park ...

There was a report on FR yesterday that Japan has found a “rare earths” deposit on one of their island.

Happy days are here again.

I loved their 45 hit, “Get Ready”.

Well, he isn’t dumb. But he is an old and also a Leftist. Mainly he just says what’s on his mind.

If he was a conservative the Left would completely flip out over what he might say.

Yep. Pure insanity.

BTW, Prince believed in all of it. He was on with Tavis Smiley (you can see Tavis Smiley way off to the left, hosting - he’s the one who tells Dick Gregory not to drop his microphone.

Prince wrote a song about it - “Dreamer”.

Tavis Smiley acted as if he didn’t know anything about it. The PBS was once out there; now gone.

Australia’s Lynas (OTCPK:LYSCF) says it signed a memorandum of understanding with Texas-based Blue Line Corp. to build the first rare earths separation plant in the U.S. in years.

The companies say their proposed joint venture, which would be majority owned by the Australian miner, would focus on separating heavy rare earths such as dysprosium and terbium, and would be the only large-scale producer of medium and heavy rare earths outside China.

Lynas CEO Amanda Lacaze says the U.S. venture will complement its operations in Malaysia while also closing a “critical” supply chain gap for U.S. manufacturers.
