Cortez takes on the Christian right - the Bible backs her campaign for a 15% interest rate cap

Freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez believes Christians should back her recent credit card interest rate cap because she says the bible prohibits usury.

'Usury - aka high interest - happens to be explicitly denounced in the Bible (& in many other religions),' Ocasio-Cortez tweeted Thursday night.

'Looking forward to having the religious right uphold their principles + sign onto my bill. Unless of course they're only invoking religion to punish women + queer people,' she continued.

Is Cow Fartz Cortez endorsing a Christian theocracy for the United States?

But -— even if not observed -— the Jubilee year was commanded, was it not?

It’s worth discussing what would be a just and adequate definition for “usury”. Because it IS a sin. But how do we specify the circumstances or the amount?

Perhaps it’s like pornography - we know it when we see it!

But yeah there is no percentage given.

I might start with ten percent - cause that is a tithe that His requires. I might argue that we shouldn’t do more than that.

It’s something one rarely sees seriously discussed.

I feel like I’m stupider for simply clicking on this link. It’s as if millions of brain cells suddenly cried out in anguish.

Funny, how the left always wants to try to claim Religious High ground, even though most don’t even have the most basic understanding of theology....

So... Let me pose you this question Congresswoman...

If 10% is good enough for Jesus, why do you want 90%?

Dems are all Bible scholars all of a sudden.

Yes, expediency is a wonderful thing for making one an instant expert on a subject about which one knows nothing.

I notice that Butt-i-Boy is suddenly privy to all of God's thoughts and intentions and is generously sharing that information with we, The Great Unwashed.

Higher risk investments should be able to recoup higher rates of return.

Banks do not offer everyone the same interest rates. Different credit risks, different collateral holdings, and different reasons for loans, are quoted different rates.

Noone forces anyone to take out a loan, unless its a family court demanding a father do so.

The definition of “high” interest is a subjective term as well.

Socialists do not get to pick and choose which parts of the bible they want to use to further their socialist agenda.

Shut that shiite down right now.

A fifteen percent rate cap sounds reasonable. If gummit is permitted to impose such limitations on our liberty to contract —- then 15 percent sounds reasonable. But there’s a second problem with it—- it will cut off credit to some Americans who now can get it — I acknowledge that a high rate loan is undesirable but if you need money then it’s still a lot better to have access to funds, then not.

If she really capped interest rates at 15%, then some people who would qualify for cards today would be rejected. If the bill would allow lenders to choose who to lend to, it could work. However, when lenders were "redlining" the poor to keep them from getting loans, Obama and the government intervened, with a big assist from the Federal reserve continuously lowering interest rates for 30 years, and the result was the subprime mortgage industry.

Another God hating socialist trying to manipulate Christians using Scripture to bludgeon them with.

They must really think we’re a bunch of morons to fall for their tactics.

They are way underestimating us, to our benefit and their detriment.

Keep up the good work, losers.

Yup. She could dry up access to money for many. Make it more difficult for some more people too. It’s tough dealing with the real world but we can hope the House of Reps might someday rise to the occasion.

First, agree with her so she stops talking.

Then acknowledge that we need to get a handle on these evil voluntary LENDERS of money. Before they become flat out forceful TAKERS of money - to whom you pay 2 or 3 times that usury rate... forever... despite never getting the loan.

She is filling the air with hot again. In the United States, individual states are responsible for setting their own usury laws. The only time it can be considered under federal control is if it involves interstate commerce. And many decry within the states that usurious practices are hurting consumers while others claim that the absence of usury laws open up access to credit for more people.

The federal government does say that violent actions can not be part of the transactions. Therefore, no one is forcing anyone to use a credit line, the consumer decides for themselves. And if you follow the laws of the states you wish to utilize for the credit, you can shop per state, also. Don’t be stupid, and you won’t have a problem. But she starts with a stupid thought.

There is no debt forgiveness. There’s only someone else will have to cover the loss whether it be by the consumers or the employees of the company. Someone’s got to bite the bullet. And the person with the debt walks to do it again as he’ll get his first ad to get a card before he changes his socks.
