Telling the awful truth about the new SAT ‘adversity’ score
American Thinker ^ | 05/17/2019 | Thomas Lifson

Few people have the audacity to speak the truth about the underlying problem with the efforts to engineer “diversity” – which in practice means that blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans receive a share of jobs, college admissions, income, and other products of achievement at least proportional to their share of the population. Fortunately, Heather Mac Donald of the Manhattan Institute has a lot of guts.

Last night, Ms. Mac Donald appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight and discussed the newly-announced “adversity score” adopted by the College Board publishers of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).  As explained by the New York Times:

The company announced on Thursday that it will include a new rating, which is widely being referred to as an “adversity score,” of between 1 and 100 on students’ test results. An average score is 50, and higher numbers mean more disadvantage. The score will be calculated using 15 factors, including the relative quality of the student’s high school and the crime rate and poverty level of the student’s neighborhood.

The rating will not affect students’ test scores, and will be reported only to college dmissions officials as part of a larger package of data on each test taker.

The Wall Street Journal expresses the decision factors in this graphic:

In his introduction Carlson outlined many problems with the whole idea:

It’s kept a secret. “Trust us,” in effect, they say. There is no appeal possible. And as a black box whose inner workings are secret, it becomes an ideal vehicle for engineering the racial results admissions offices desire.

It is easily gamed – fake addresses, even possible income manipulation by claiming a lot of depreciation,

Face it. America has dumbed down considerably over the last fifty years.

Yes let us lower the bar to get into college rather then raise the abilities of the people trying to get in! That works so well!

Forced equality of result is always socialism.

The CEO of College Board, David Coleman, who is pushing this nonsense, is a Dem Party donor.

Tucker hit this one out of the park last night. “Why are we going to punish families who stayed together, had kids they took care of and educated?”

“adversity” score = dumbing-down. Face it. Meritocracy built this country...not mediocrity, not giving consideration to adversity. Idiot “educators” strike again. What incompetent PC nitwits.

Now, instead of having Aunt Becky pay $1M to get you a fake athletic profile, you can just lie about your zip code.

Although I disagree with any “extra” points,

where does it state that “race” is calculated into these points?

"Race" isn't calculated into these points. They just use surrogate measures of social dysfunction that are de facto indicators of race.

You don't think Beverly Hills is going to have a higher "adversity score" than Detroit on any parameter used to measure this sh!t -- do you?

My wife scored a perfect 800 on the Math portion of the SAT back when it was still difficult (1987). She finished High School in 3 years and then Johns Hopkins in only 3 years. She’s had a long and prosperous engineering career since. I was a piker by comparison but still managed to be an Army officer and pilot for 24 years. We did not come from wealthy families.

Now, my sons, because of their parent’s hard work and success, will be punished. We live in an excellent school district south of Boston in a town that’s probably 98% white. We’re probably in the highest income bracket for their silly formula. I’m guessing my sons will actually have points DEDUCTED from their scores due to their immense “privilege”. We’re living in sad times.

ANSWER: For the same reasons that the lib crowd approach to gun control is to punish the law-abiding by restricting freedom rather than dealing with the law-breakers.

It sure is much easier for Aunt Becky to pay $500 for a dump in Detroit to use as your home address than to pay a $1M bribe to get you into USC.

A probable safe bet on this factoring bs: ai

California has been applying these bs factors shortly after Obama became president before accepting students into the UC or State University systems.

In other words, a smart kid with both parents, raised in a good neighborhood, even with a great grade point average and SAT's would not be accepted.

Telling the awful truth

That would be nice for a change.

Race is one thing that is almost never honestly discussed in this nation.

The College Board needs to stick to it's job and just report the raw test results.

Universities can calculate their own "Adversity Score" for applicants if they feel the need.

This is the democrat’s way of telling Blacks that they’re too stupid to do what everyone else does.
Blatantly racist on its face.

The biggest reason this country is going down the crapper is because we’re being lead by complete imbeciles with fancy degrees from elite colleges.

Who cares? The SAT is not the standard that it once was. Standardized tests are BS and a scam anyway. The College Board needs to be abolished. In many cases and growing trend is that there is no need for SAT to enroll in many colleges unless one wants to go to highly selective colleges.
