Attorney General William Barr has appointed a U.S. attorney to examine the origins of the Russia investigation and determine if intelligence collection efforts targeting the Trump campaign were "lawful and appropriate," a person familiar with the situation told Fox News on Monday evening.
John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, will conduct the inquiry, the source said. The move comes as the Trump administration has pushed for answers on why federal authorities conducted the surveillance -- as well as whether Democrats were the ones who improperly colluded with foreign actors.
Two sources told Fox News earlier today that Barr was “serious” and had assigned DOJ personnel to the probe. Durham is known as a "hard-charging, bulldog" prosecutor, Fox News is told.

rut roh...the IG report is about to be released....IG Horowitz does NOT have prosecutorial powers...but this guy does..heh heh..he should do exactly as Mueller did, go by the letter of the law, no matter how technical.

Horowitz was hamstrung by a Catch-22 which prevented him from doing anything Mueller was investigating. Horowitz has produced NOTHING.

Actually, AG Sessions had already appointed USA John Durham to investigate criminal leaks by FBI personnel, including former FBI General Counsel James Baker. This was revealed during Baker's 10/3/2018 closed door testimony to the Joint Committee on Government Reform and Oversight (see page 37 of the transcript released by Rep. Doug Collins), and was the basis for blocking Rep. Jordan's specific line of questioning toward Baker. At the time of that revelation Jeff Sessions was still AG (until 11/7/2018), so it is apparent that USA Durham began this investigation long ago. This is good news for those who feared that AG Barr was just getting started.
We can know what he is not doing, and it's troubling:

imo it is apparent durham has been investigating leaks by fbi personnel and NOW has been tasked with investigating government surveillance involving trump...kinda late eh?
What troubles me is that we were just a few weeks away from seeing the FISA applications.
Now. with the appointment of John Durham, we may never see these FISA applications.
We waited two years while Meuller prolonged his investigation that should have ended in one month.

Agree, he certainly doesn’t sound like Deep State to me.
People have to understand the TOTALLY SICK MINDSET now in play in DC. It’s not that the people protecting the Deep State, with FBI Director Wray being the latest, necessarily like the idea of the FBI running around spying on political campaigns, it’s that they think they are protecting the ‘reputation’ of the FBI, so it can do the remainder of its work, looking for terrorists, etc., effectively. These ‘protectors’ live in this huge fear that the public may lose confidence in the FBI and that has to be prevented, at all costs. They also think that Alex Jones, Rush, Hannity, and only a small number of their followers actually believe that there was/is some ‘conspiracy’ against Trump...but the rest of us, including the vast majority of Republicans know that the ONLY type of people who work for the FBI are Inspector Erskine types...straight, by the book, and never political.
They are clueless, but they often can only be outed AFTER they’ve secured their position of protection, I mean power.
The same applies with voting integrity. You see Republican leaders willing to lose majorities, and sometimes their own seats, and still say that our system is fine, with no fraud. How come? Again, they live in ABJECT FEAR of the masses losing confidence in our elections - and that is even more important to them than stopping people like Schumer...it is a VERY SICK mindset on our side, but we’re stuck with them until we can root them out.
It’s also worth noting that this ‘protect the system at all costs’ ONLY seems to happen on the Republican side - the Dems will trash anything, rightly or wrongly, to get their power. Sucks having to deal with that mindset on our side, but Trump and thankfully now Barr, are willing to at least trash the system, when it needs to be trashed, FINALLY.

I checked the testimony and you are correct. You are the first in all the stories I’ve read to have caught that. Any idea if this is a seperate investigation, when did it start, when did it end? In the testimony it seems as though Jordan was surprised by this information. Now I am starting to get giddy. Thanks for the info.
That makes him complicit in the coup along with Sessions. After all, both of them thought Trump would have been impeached by now and nobody would be the wiser. Just a matter of time before some communications popup about these two traitors.
concur! i live here in the swamp. The system needs to be nuked. It isn’t worth saving. No part except some yellowed old screed on display in the national archives signed in 1787, that isn’t even of sentimental value here.
