Poll: Rift Over Green New Deal Deepens (only 11.71 years to go)

MANY MORE REGISTERED voters are aware of the Green New Deal, but the political split surrounding the polarizing legislative proposal aimed at curtailing climate change has deepened over the past four months, according to a recent poll.

Republican approval of the plan tanked, while Democratic support remained high – between 88%-96% – according to a Yale and George Mason University poll released this week.

Over half of self-identified conservative Republicans supported the climate plan in December 2018. That number dropped to 32% in April. For moderate and liberal Republicans, the number fell from 75% approval to 64%.

The poll described the Green New Deal as a proposal to generate 100% of the nation's electricity from clean, renewable resources within the next 10 years, upgrade the nation's energy grid, buildings and transportation infrastructure, increase energy efficiency, invest in "green" technology research and development and provide training for jobs in the new "green" economy.

Senate Votes Down Green New Deal Resolution 0-57

Forty-three Democrats voted “present” and three Democrats — Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), and Doug Jones (D-AL) — voted against the resolution. Sen. Angus King (I-ME) also voted with Republicans against the measure.

Many Democrats — including Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), who sponsored the resolution in the Senate — called the vote a “sham” because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called for it without scheduling any hearings.

“[Climate change] is the national security, economic, health care and moral issue of our time,” Markey said at a press conference at the Capitol ahead of the vote. “We must act now.”
