Trump Proposal Aims To Make It Easier To Deport Immigrants Using Public Benefits

The White House is considering a proposal to make it easier to deport low-income immigrants who are dependent on public benefits.

The Department of Justice has written a draft regulation that, if implemented, would greatly expand the number of immigrants in the U.S. who could be subject to deportation for using public benefits, Reuters reported Friday. The new proposal is part of the Trump administration’s larger effort to limit immigration from low-income foreign nationals.

Such benefits include the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly referred to as “food stamps;” Supplemental Security Income (SSI) doled out to the elderly and disabled people; Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); Section 8 housing vouchers and various Medicaid benefits.

If the draft regulation is put into effect, it would be a sharp reversal from longstanding policy.

Permanent legal residents — also known as green card holders — who are dependent on the government for assistance and determined to be a “public charge” are already subject to deportation. However, in reality, few are ever actually deported. A 1948 ruling has essentially restricted such deportations to only those immigrants who the government has demanded to pay for public services but have failed to do so.

U.S. laws technically allow for the removal of legal residents who are deemed “public charges” within the first five years of their admission if their reason for seeking benefits predated their entry into the U.S., the news organization noted, for example, if an immigrant did not disclose a health issue that requires government assistance. However, because of the decades-old ruling, deportation for this reason almost never happens.

The proposal suggests the Trump administration would override this precedent and allow for the removal of immigrants who have taken advantage of public benefits within the first five years of their admission.

Always they omit the ILLEGAL part of the immigrant this is aimed at.

This is good, these illegal need to stop being rewarded for violating the United States Sovereignty. When my parents LEGALLY immigrated to America they had to swear to not seek or accept any government aid for a period of five years on pain of expulsion.

These parasites are taught by democrats how to cheat the American taxpayer before they ever leave their country of origin.

The Democrats don’t want people who want to become productive citizens. They want criminals outright who will be a drain on society and they want people who will be welfare clients for life and their children and everyone votes for the Democrats to keep the corrupt system going.

Actually in this case I believe it applies to legal immigrants also, i.e. green card holders. But this is a good thing, less Democrat voters.

That’s not how I see it.

Seems like there’s LOTS of legals who are mooching and some bill passe in 1948 makes it very difficult to deport them...

... A 1948 ruling has essentially restricted such deportations...

Of course there are plenty of illegals collecting and they need to go too.

But I DONT WANT LEGALS here mooching either.

And I know areas in brooklyn where that number is HUGE.

And some of those same people by day are in the car accident insurance fraud business, among other no so legal things.

What is SSI and who does it cover?
Supplemental Security Income is designed for those for whom regular Social Security benefits are insufficient to meet basic financial needs. Only those with limited income and resources who are 65 or older or are disabled or blind can get SSI. That means that many of those who qualify for SSI also get retirement or disability benefits from Social Security as well...

Except in a few rare cases like local school board elections in left wing states Green card holders can't vote. They aren't citizens or else there would be no need for the green card.

Why would this be hard to do ???

Before I IMMIGRATED to America in 1971, I signed a document and swore with my right hand raised that I understood and agreed that I would not even apply for government benefits of any kind, or I would be deported.. I was not entitled to any help from the American government...

One big an IMMIGRANT had to prove they were employable with a good years long employment record...

This was part of the IMMIGRATION process...when did this change ???

I don’t know when it changed or IF it changed but I was shocked about ten years ago when I took my buddy to the most available SS office so he could file for his regular benefits. He went in and I struck up a conversation with Security Guard. I asked him what was point of all the 23-27 year old Hispanics going in? He looked at me and said “ They can’t speak English, so they obviously can’t work, right?” My buddy was told to come back after he made an appointment!

It should be legal and illegal. They are all ticks. Why is it better if legal invaders are living off of the taxpayer?

This is the LAW that both Democrat and Republican congresses and presidents have chosen to ignore. That’s why the shiftless from all over the world want to come to the USA and sign up for freebies....financed by your tax dollars.

“The proposal suggests the Trump administration would override this precedent and allow for the removal of immigrants who have taken advantage of public benefits within the first five years of their admission.”

This is an excellent first step. If fully and completely implemented we could rid ourselves of several million leeches.

Ask any expat just about anywhere and they will tell you that in order to reside in another country such as Costa Rica, Belize, etc., in their retirement years, they needed to prove financial independence. It most certainly should pertain here as well. Enough is enough!

My sister visited this week from East TN, they live up near Dollywood/Smokies area, in the tourist traps restaurants, lodges etc. employers are PAID $3,000 per each student to hire Asian college students for the Summer, they are not required to do much actual work; plus all the Federal Income Tax they pay in is RETURNED to the students when they return home after the tourist season. That leaves the local American College students without jobs or find it hard to locate jobs. Another tax loophole to close.

Reading it, it at least sounds like it is otherwise-legal green-card holders they are going after here.

Does it also include the majority of illegals who receive some sort of government benefits?

If so, do you have a source on that?
