In the coming weeks, thousands of college students will walk across a stage and proudly accept their diplomas. Many of them will be hungry.
A senior at Lehman College in the Bronx dreams of starting her day with breakfast. An undergraduate at New York University said he has been so delirious from hunger, hes caught himself walking down the street not realizing where hes going. A health sciences student at Stony Brook University on Long Island describes poverty naps, where she decides to go to sleep rather than deal with her hunger pangs.
These are all examples of food insecurity, the state of having limited or uncertain access to food. Stories about college hunger have been largely anecdotal, cemented by ramen and macaroni and cheese jokes. But recent data indicate the problem is more serious and widespread, affecting almost half of the student population at community and public colleges.

How do they afford all the beer and summer break at Cancun?
Reminds me of a book I had fifty years ago! HOW TO FEED 4 FOR A DOLLAR.
Clearly these kids need BIGGER STUDENT LOANS. We certainly can’t have college kids having “food insecurity.”
If they retreat to their safe spaces with rumbling tummies, will they get kicked out?
Think Spam and bread, you whiny little cry-babies. Then there is peanut butter and jelly. I’ve lived on both. F*ck all you millenials.
They certainly would. I do electrical design for utility distribution, and I do well.
I still eat a lot of rice. Also beans. They do need a few other things added to be any good.
Agreed!
Been there, done that! You can find food in a lot of places believe me
Nope. For a fairly “cheap” public university in MA. dorms are $9K/yr and the food plan is 4K. (Yes, I could probably eat a lot cheaper than that, and will have to.......)
Bulksht We survived on pasta and sauce in the 60’s
Nothing but a propaganda piece to promote the Rats student loan scam.
Chefs today have learned if they put 3 bites of lobster and a trio of cheeses in a bowl of mac ‘n cheese, they can charge $20. A cheap box of mac ‘n cheese is 3/$1 at the grocery store.
With a little creativity, a fancy full meal can be made at home for a couple bucks. A nothing but filling meal can be made for pennies.
They all have cell phones and weed, though.
The real question is beer or dinner
So, eat day old bread and pot cheese and save enough for a beer
Not buyin’ it.
I just spent a week in South Carolina at several different hotels. Most had grits and biscuits and gravy at the breakfast buffet.
I’ll be in Maine and Long Island next week. I assume the hotels will be gritless and gravyless
Stand in front of the professors and administration cars and beg for money. They are rich off the loans you so stupidly took out.
Mother cooked grits for breakfast most days. I have always liked them but you have to have sausage meat and eggs along with toast to go with them.
When they look like they have been liberated from a concentration camp, then I will give a crap. The majority are all starving and 30 pounds over weight.
Peanut butter and crackers
Actually, most of them are overweight, have cars and cell phones, have daily $5.00 Starbucks machiattos, carry Michel Kors purses, have regular professional manicures and pedicures, eat out constantly, etc.
