In the coming weeks, thousands of college students will walk across a stage and proudly accept their diplomas. Many of them will be hungry.
A senior at Lehman College in the Bronx dreams of starting her day with breakfast. An undergraduate at New York University said he has been so delirious from hunger, hes caught himself walking down the street not realizing where hes going. A health sciences student at Stony Brook University on Long Island describes poverty naps, where she decides to go to sleep rather than deal with her hunger pangs.
These are all examples of food insecurity, the state of having limited or uncertain access to food. Stories about college hunger have been largely anecdotal, cemented by ramen and macaroni and cheese jokes. But recent data indicate the problem is more serious and widespread, affecting almost half of the student population at community and public colleges.

Look at the bright side, “The Freshman 15” is a thing of the past.
I was always broke in college and didn't eat some days at all. One two week stretch, I remember eating nothing but black licorice I found in the cupboards in an apartment I moved into. I can't stand to even look at black licorice today, let alone eat it.
I eventually landed a job as a kitchen helper doing dishes and cleanup at a fraternity house and got 3 free meals a week when I worked. I felt like I had hit the jackpot.
But being a broke, starving student at university, is all part of the experience. This story is bogus.
Extensive examination here, by God's grace. Food hunger in America: More Hype than Reality. Why?
They already have the 15 when they get into high school.
It builds character and toughens you up.
Bull Squat. ALL these kids have a cell phone, they also likely go out partying and smoking weed and crap as well.
What a pant-load.
Fake news.
About 40% of college students live on campus. If you cannot afford to EAT, you move in with your parents and shave $10,000 a year off your room and board.
I promise you, you can eat if you cut out that massive budget line item.
One of my favorite memories from school was being dead broke and mowing a professor’s near vertical yard for $10 and buying a pound of hamburger, box of hamburger helper and a 12 pack for dinner.
What about those ultra cheap Ramen Noodles that students lived on a few years ago?
Funny you should mention Hamburger Helper. I was planning on making that tomorrow night. The Beef Pasta, good stuff. “Near vertical yard’’? Dang. Where was this?
Never got quite to that level. Just had to be really frugal.
Selling blood? Dang!
>>I sometimes chose beer over food.<<
Wait, there is a difference?
Yep. Some rack up ‘$300 Phone bills playing games. They die if they can’t order a$25 pizza.
Ramen
Beans and rice
Tune a fish
Got it ?
A lot of professors need their pay cut by about a third. That should feed their hungry students.
When I was in college in the 60’s, I always had a box of crackers and jars of peanut butter in my room’s desk. Fed me and a few others.
We didn’t have a lot of money to spend on anything. I got $30 a month from my parents, plus whatever money I had earned working each summer.
This was to be used for additional food (I paid for both room and board (food)), transportation (subway or bus in Philly), dates (almost none except on campus), outside entertainment (none), 50 cent T-shirts for my team workouts, and occasionally to pay for student event (Mary Wells/Lou Christie show, Bill Cosby show, that’s about it).
Remember, most of the colleges mentioned are in New York City/State, which is run by Mafia punk Cuomo and psycho-Commie DeBlasio. Need I say more?
Hey kids, welcome to the Democrats “New World” of indoctrination, overpriced professors/tuition and books. You wanted it, you got it. YOU OWN IT.
so how many of these “hunger” students buy their coffee at Starbucks, smoke, have cable, $1,500-2,000 cell phones, etc ???
This article doesn’t seem to expose these and other unnecessary expenses...
IOW what are they spending Daddy’s money on instead ???
and breakfast can be cornflakes and milk at home instead of Starbucks...
I worked at Waffle House night shift...ate dinner and breakfast free...got off at 6am...went home and went to 8am class...
Hey snowflakes, go to Dollar Tree and get frozen steak for a Dollar. Ok it isn’t prime, but it is FOOD. Ramon noodles is available, so is cereal, canned meats...
Beer is food.
Re: Post #46. Starbucks, is true. At USF main library, there is a Starbucks that is busy and just outside the campus, Starbucks is busy with about 75% students...Panera Bread is busy with about 45% students...
