Ron Chernow Honors Journalists at White House Correspondents’ Dinner With a History Lesson

WASHINGTON — President Trump may have succeeded in drawing attention to a rally on the same night as the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, but the annual Beltway event went on as if it didn’t matter that the administration was boycotting it.

At the Washington Hilton, there were few celebrities, not even that many elected officials and this year, there wasn’t even a comedian. But the event still sold out, a tight fit in the oval-shaped ballroom.

Instead, the host was historian Ron Chernow, the author of “Alexander Hamilton,” on which the Broadway sensation was based. His 30-minute keynote was humorous, insightful and even inspirational, drawing two standing ovations as he put in historical context the Trump presidency and what he called “this surreal interlude in American life.”

Quoting Will Rogers, Chernow said, “Everything is changing. People are taking their comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke.”

Last year’s featured entertainer, Michelle Wolf, proved to be too much for a number of journalists and D.C. politicos, as she directed her provocative humor at some of those who were in attendance, including White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway.

Chernow may not have been as biting as Wolf, but he still was critical of Trump, particularly for his attacks on the media and for contributing to a “rising tide of misinformation” that “threatens to make a mockery of the First Amendment.”

His quips weren’t caustic, but clever and a bit biting.

“Now as best as I can tell, Washington committed only one major blunder as president: He failed to put his name on Mount Rushmore and thereby bungled an early opportunity at branding,” he quipped. It was a reference to a Politico story about Trump’s remarks that Washington should have named his home after...

Honoring Assange, conservative Twitter & Facebook users, Alex Jones, etc? You know, real victims of censorship.

Any mention of the journalists that Obama wiretapped and harassed?
I didn’t think so.

It does kind of bring a smile to my face. Here's these dolts giving a dinner for themselves. Hey look at us, we're important and we're giving a dinner for ourselves. Aren't we just so special?

Sorry to let you down folks, but you're not special. Now on the other hand if someone important were there at your dinner, oh say, someone like President Trump, then you might be someone who could have a measure of importance.

Some advice for next year. Just gather at a local park and have DoorDash® deliver.

No historian, that one.

The socialist/progressive crap since the 1950’s has been “this surreal interlude in American life.”

Trump is a breath of fresh patriotic air, an old-school America-loving man. I must assume this Democrat-pundit-historian is a girlie-man.

Said the bully who most of the school's children won't play with anymore.

We watched as much of his “routine” as we could. What he missed is that President Donald Trump is the “Dr. Thomas Stockmann” character in “An Enemy of the People”, not “the Press”. Here is Act III from Wikipedia:

Act III
In the newspaper office, Hovstad and Billing discuss the pros and cons of running Dr. Stockmann’s article, which will damage the reputation of the town government. They are ready to proceed and help bring the privileged classes down. Dr. Stockmann comes into the office and tells them to print the article, but the office starts to experience a change of heart, questioning how valuable is it really to expose the government and the town’s baths in this way. They realize printing this article will do more damage than help with the situation, and may cause the town’s economy to crater. Peter Stockmann comes to the newspaper office with a statement of his own, intending to reassure the public about the safety of the spa baths. The newspaper readily agrees to print the mayor’s statement. Desperate, Dr. Stockmann decides that he does not need the paper to print anything and that he can fight this battle on his own. He decides to call a town meeting and spread the information that way. Katrine Stockmann realizes that her husband is making an extreme decision and is risking his reputation, but she stands by him.

I am so glad Chernow brought this up!

Quoting Will Rogers, Chernow said,
Every time I read someone quoting someone else to make their point I think of what my father told me decades ago.

Whatever the subject or the side of the argument, someone has already written an answer or validated your thoughts on it, you only have to find it.

Check out your facts Ron Chernow - trust in the press is dying because the press is NOT taking responsibility for their choices...

“His quips weren’t caustic, but clever and a bit biting.”

False. Yahoo writers are good liars and cheaters. Chernow’s talk was about fifteen minutes and I listened to it. He said that Ronald Reagan was humble and JFK was humble. Hint. Hint. (Trump is not humble.) And Chernow complimented the journalists for their bravery about ten times. Unreasonable and useless.

In other news, President Trump talked to a full stadium on the same night and talked about how human rights come form God and not from government. Reasonable and practical.
