'Hold Wales independence vote if no further Brexit poll'
BBC ^ | 26 april 2019 | beeb

Wales should hold an independence referendum if Brexit happens without a further EU poll, Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price has said.

People could then choose between an independent Wales at Europe's "heart" or a "forgotten second-class region in a dying British state," he said.

The independence call goes further than his party conference speech in March.

Polling for BBC Wales has put support for independence at less than 10% since 2011.

Mr Price said Wales should hold a "new national conversation" about the country's future whatever happens with the UK's departure from the European Union.

In last month's speech to party members, in Bangor, he called for an independence referendum if a series of post-Brexit demands were not met.

His demands included a call for European funding for Wales to be guaranteed, cuts in VAT for tourism and construction, the devolution of powers over air passenger duty, and control over migration policy.

But now Mr Price has gone further by making a Welsh independence referendum dependent on whether Brexit goes ahead without a second EU referendum.

"It is broken Westminster, not the EU, which has failed the people of Wales," he said.

"I do not believe that the poverty facing our country is inevitable and nor will these problems be fixed by Brexit.

"They will be fixed by taking our future into our own hands and becoming a nation in our own right."

His comments follow a demand by the Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Wednesday for a second referendum on Scottish independence by 2021 if Scotland is taken out of the EU.

Plaid Cymru can only wish -- there is next to no movement for independence in Wales. I see this as pure political posturing.

Wales basically conquered England in a way in my opinion) when Henry VII Tudor was made king -- he was only a vague relationship and was Welsh by his father.

I see it as lunacy.

Wales wants freedom from the UK while continuing to kowtow to Brussels.

Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.

Would you say that Scotland then conquered England with the coronation of James VI?

Maybe it would be best to sweep all this under the rug. Elizabeth's successes notwithstanding, the Tudors were not exactly praiseworthy folks.

An independent Wales would be an economic basket case. One day, the English are going to wake up and realize that an independent Wales and Scotland are in their best interests.

Correct. Ever since the end of coal mining, Wales is an economic basket case. Beautiful scenery though..

I just can’t figure out the thinking of the Irish, Welsh or Scottish Nationalists.

They supposedly want independence so badly, they are wiling to turn themselves into a suburb of distant Brussels, with currency, courts, laws, immigration and finance over which they have zero control.

Actually read the article. Welsh support for independence ia about 7% to 10%.

Let’s not forget Elizabeth beheaded Mary Queen of the Scots and the one time Queen of France.

Wales also voted for Brexit (narrowly), unlike Scotland and Northern Ireland which were opposed. I don’t know how the Welsh feel about Brexit now, but this is just the leader of the independence party using the occasion to call for a referendum, not something that the people are crying out for.

If independent, Wales would be one step above Greece....which isn’t much to brag about. The EU would be asking a lot of questions, and their entry into the EU might not occur, for at least a decade. But brilliant move on their part to be a marginalized country.

His demands included a call for European funding for Wales to be guaranteed, … and control over migration policy.

Sigh. Notice that he demands other people's money.

And I've been to Wales, which is mostly bleak, so I can't imagine there's much of an immigration into Wales problem. But he didn't say "immigration" policy, he said "migration" policy. So does this means he wants to restrict people from leaving Wales?

Yeah, I don’t think an independent Wales has been an option for about 1000 years now.
