The F.B.I. on Saturday arrested the leader of a right-wing militia that was detaining migrant families at gunpoint near the border in southern New Mexico, as the group faced a torrent of criticism for its tactics.
Hector Balderas, New Mexico’s attorney general, said federal agents had arrested the leader, Larry Mitchell Hopkins, who had been operating under the alias Johnny Horton Jr. Mr. Balderas said in a statement that Mr. Hopkins was arrested on charges of firearms possession by a felon.
“This is a dangerous felon who should not have weapons around children and families,” Mr. Balderas said. “Today’s arrest by the F.B.I. indicates clearly that the rule of law should be in the hands of trained law enforcement officials, not armed vigilantes.”

One of the biggest problems with DV laws today is an angry ex makes a DV claim and the (usually) ex-husband takes a plea instead of fighting it in court. The DV sticks even if he doesn’t do jail time. Well, that’s sadly the law and if that’s you, you better be smart enough not to get caught possessing after that, or fight the charge in court and make the prosecutor prove his damn case instead of giving him a win with a reduced charge plea.

What is missing here is the precedent this sets in New Mexico in the future (after July 1 2019). That is when acquisition of a firearm without a federal background check becomes against the law in New Mexico. So if law enforcement is out to get someone as in this instance they can attempt to make a case that because a firearm is not registered, it was illegally acquired, even if was bought from a private party before July 1, or bought legally from an out-of-state party not covered by NM law. All of a sudden, all gun owners are under suspicion as lawbreakers. LEO may not be able to prove their case in court, but just the attempt suceeds in bringing a chill to citizens supporting Second Amendment rights.
Actually “felony” doesn’t describe anything about the crime except the penalty. I’m not an attorney, and various states may have different laws, but a felony is usually described as a crime with a penalty of one year or more incarceration. A misdemeanor is a crime with a penalty of less than a year incarceration. So I can only presume (I try to never assume) that a “dangerous “ felony involved some threat or action of violence, as opposed to cheating on your taxes. Not sure what the legal definition is.

Decades later, in 2006, Hopkins was arrested in Klamath County, Oregon on charges of impersonating a police officer and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

So, it appears as though our "dangerous felon" became a felon by committing fraud, and then lore enfarcement was able to continue ramping up charges on him when he insisted on carrying firearms in subsequent years.

My first question would have been:
Was he trying to scare them? Was he trying to impress them?
Go back and re-read it, and then tell me where we find that out.
