Well we didnt make it but we definitely tried, said Morris Kahn the president of SpaceIL, the company that created the lander which appears to have crash landed on the moon today.
I was watching the live feed of the attempted landing and with about 30 minutes to go they announced they had reached a point of no return. They were going for it. For a while it seemed everything was going well. The spacecraft dropped from about 23,000 meters above the moon to about 15,000 meters. The ship even snapped a selfie on the way down (thats it above).
And then the room got very quiet. At first, they lost telemetry and the real-time updates of altitude, velocity, etc. stopped updating. Telemetry came back a moment later and then they announced there was a problem with the main engine. They attempted to restart the engine and a minute later it seemed that attempt had succeeded and for a moment it seemed the mission would recover. And then they lost contact. Someone came forward and told the assembled audience they had lost the spacecraft. It was over.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was there watching in the control room along with a few dozen other people. He came forward and said, If at first you dont succeed, you try again.

Well....next time then.
That's pretty damn good for a first try.
They are simply at the ‘Ranger’ level of our Moon landers................
the damned PLO-Abbas gang shot it down
You know the Israelis will figure it out. Meanwhile their neighbors on all sides are perfecting the science of neck cutting.
It’s obvious that the space aliens from outerspace didn’t want humans landing in that particular part of the moon.
Shoulda stuck to the designated parking area.
Less glamorous, but I admire their try.
Their decision to try again.
But, I would recommend that the second try be made on the near side of the moon, while everything is visible and doesn’t require relays around the moon’s shadow zone for radio.
We launched 9 Ranger spacecraft to the Moon in the 60s.
5 were failures..................
NON-soft landing?
Buzz’s comments:
Condolences to the Beresheet lander @TeamSpaceIL for what almost was! Communications were lost with the spacecraft just 150 meters (!!!) above the surface, and it couldn’t quite stick the landing. Never lose hope - your hard work, teamwork, and innovation is inspiring to all!
Maybe its parachute failed.
or is that what they want us to believe...
Jewish Occupation of the Moon has started. They have already kicked out all the Palestinians and started building settlements on the dark side... / sarc
good for the jewish state... reach for the stars.
Great minds think alike, I was just now reading wikipedia articles about some of our early failures to hit the moon.
Beresheet's landing target was on the near side of the moon (Mare Serenitatis).
Meanwhile, SpaceX successfully landed all 3 of the booster bodies from today's Falcon Heavy launch.

A useful belief is that there are no failures, just results, feedback, and opportunities for learning
Dang
I was pulling for them
Now that was funny.
