MOUNT SODOM, ISRAEL Israeli researchers said Thursday they have surveyed what they now believe to be the worlds longest salt cave, a network of twisting passageways at the southern tip of the Dead Sea.
A recently completed survey of the Malham Cave determined the labyrinthine cavern stretches more than 6 miles in length. That puts it well ahead of Irans Namakdan Cave, previously thought to be the longest salt cave.
**SNIP**
The Malham Caves main outlet yawns not far from a salt pillar named Lots wife, after the biblical character who was petrified for looking back at the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. On the mountainside above, Langford, Vlaykova and their colleagues have identified at least 19 openings where seasonal floods have percolated through Mount Sodoms rock salt to form the cave.

Yes we know G-d told Lot and his wife to leave Sodom and not look back, at all. Lot’s whife looked back. O.K. By why was her outcome to be a pillar of salt.
I have read long ago about why the pillar of salt in particular. Just wondering what other’s bible studies have made of that point.

Lot asked his wife to provide salt for their guests. His wife went to neighbors to borrow salt as a way of letting others know they had illegal guests. So her punishment was to become salt after her husband arranged to save her.

That’s one version.
The one I heard is that she was to remain, like salt, unchanged, as salt does not really break down much, it mixes in things but becomes part of them, not changing itself.
Lot’s wife could not accept the change that G-d demanded of her family - to leave Sodom and never look back. She’d liked their properous life in Sodom and hated to leave, hated to change; and as they journeyed she was “looking back”, not “changing”, just like a pillar of salt.

The Bible says Lot went on with just his two daughters and himself. Like mother like daughters -— they both got their father drunk so he would “lay with them”. The resulting two sons were the forebears of Moab and Ammon.
Lot, early on, showed himself to be unworthy. First, he asked for (and got) the best parcel of land, then took a foolish wife, then moved to a City so sinful God determined to destroy it, then offered to let the wicked men of the city use his daughters for sex, then had to be nearly dragged out of the city, to keep from being destroyed, then allowed his two daughters to get him drunk, and have sex with him. What a guy!

Did the Bible ever say whether the pillar of salt was above ground or below grade?

False News!!
But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt
