The Brits can make for the loss by picking up Ireland, which is actually discussing reuniting with NI into the commonwealth to avoid a hard border.

The Brits can make for the loss by picking up Ireland I find it very hard to believe that there is any serious talk within the Republic of Ireland on ceding their independence to put themselves under the "protection" of the crown again.

I can’t imagine Ireland allowing themselves to be ‘picked up’ by England. These are strange times.

fruser1 -- that was a proposal by one DUP MP. The Republic of ireland doesn't want to join the commonwealth.
Do you have any idea (or does the DUP guy have any idea) what the commonwealth does today? It does literally nothing except act as a talking shop and to prepare for the commonwealth games.
No trade pacts, nothing.
Ireland joining the commonwealth only gives more room to spend money on talking.
