Ocasio-Cortez Says College Admissions Scam "Isn't That Different" From US Election Process
New York Post ^ | 3/13/2019 | Chris Perez

Posted on 03/13/2019 3:47:11 AM PDT by BadLands59

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez likened the Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin college admissions scam to the US election process on Tuesday night — saying it “isn’t that different.”

The freshman congresswoman was responding to a tweet from Bitch Media co-founder Andi Zeisler when she drew the comparison.

“Perhaps this is a good time to talk about all the perfectly legal ways the wealthy are both allowed and expected to manipulate college-admissions systems while teaching their children to disparage ‘affirmative action,'” Zeisler tweeted.

“I guess college admissions isn’t that different from elections, where lots of money can buy your spot too,” replied Ocasio-Cortez. “Also an enviro where those who make it despite the odds are suspected to not have ‘earned’ it, not truly belong, or assumed to not be able to perform at the same level.”

In order to have fraud you have to have a victim. Who was the victim of this "fraud" in these test scores?

Er, how about the deserving student with a stellar academic background and outstanding college admission test score who was bumped from a seat by this fraud?

Fraud it is!

Not "fraud" (as you call it).

As predicted by Yours Truly here yesterday, this scandal will be used by the Left to further promote class warfare tensions.

Wow this lady has an opinion about absolutely everything.

Ya know, they aren't asking Pelosi or Hillary anymore all the time what they think.

Interesting.

Sounds like she IS the boss.

The victim of fraud was the faceless boy or girl who should have been accepted, but was not due to the artificial inflation of these individuals’ scores.

The test is predicated on rewarding individual performance, not team performance.

Yes, the election process is corrupt. Big money buys media time and people. Any ideas on how to change that, AOC? You’re the beneficiary.

Trump was outspent 3 to 1, but the college scandal is a perfect example of socialism and how it really works.

The "deserving student" has no legal claim on getting admitted to the university, so there is no fraud. This student doesn't own a spot on the university's admission list, so he or she can't be a victim of fraud in this case by any legal definition.

This "deserving student" is no different than a person who wants to buy a new car on the lot at a dealership, but then is unable to buy it because someone stole it the night before he got there. Yeah, it's too bad you can't buy the car you want ... but it wasn't stolen from YOU because you never owned it in the first place.

The "deserving student" has no legal claim on getting admitted to the university, so there is no fraud.

So in your "world" students shouldn't be rewarded for academic excellence, they should be rewarded instead by the thickness of their parent's bankroll? Does that apply to medical school as well? Or for that matter, does it apply to any other critical profession like engineering?

I don't know where the "world" you live in is, but I am glad I am not in it.

I’m not asserting that the deserving student has an actionable claim on the spot.

Rather, I am claiming that the cheater negated the leveling effect of the standardized test in order to enhance their chances of being deemed a “deserving student”, thereby laying claim to an undeserved spot in the student body.

Fraud is defined as “an intentional misrepresentation of material existing fact made by one person to another with knowledge of its falsity and for the purpose of inducing the other person to act, and upon which the other person relies with resulting injury or damage.” The damage is to the university - which depends on its claim to a fair and impartial admissions system as a supporting leg to any claim of excellence they can make.

The fact that universities have done damage to their ability to claim excellence on their own notwithstanding, I see this as meeting the legal definition of fraud. You may disagree, of course.

Actually, it's the elite/wealthy that are responsible for affirmative action being a reality. The common man opposes it.

It's hard to believe avid supporters of Bernie did not mention to him (in person, or by email/snail mail),
that their donations were being wire-transferred to the DNC.

And when the donations didnt show up, you'd think Bernie would have asked why.
Or that Chakrabarti's tech skills would have kick in to find out where the money was.

AFAWK, Chakrabati NEVER questioned why donations to Bernie were wire-transferred to the DNC
BUT ended up in Hillary's DNC account. How'd that happen?

Bernie and Chakrabati musta been tone deaf.....not even once realizing Debbie W/S, heading the DNC,
was biased toward Hillary.....who was later ousted for her bias.

STILL TO BE DETERMINED:
<><> Did Chakrabarti-the-tech-whiz find out about the DNC theft of Bernie's donations?
<><> Chakrabarti did speak to D/W/S about it, or to Debbie's tech expert, Imran Awan, didnt he?
<><> Chakrabarti did tell Bernie he was fleeced, didnt he?
<><> Chakrabarti WAS working for Bernie, wasnt he?

So in your "world" students shouldn't be rewarded for academic excellence, they should be rewarded instead by the thickness of their parent's bankroll?

"Rewarded" in what sense? Rewarded with admission to a university -- a PRIVATE university?

That's a matter between the school and the prospective student. I have no interest in making a subjective value judgment about what constitutes a "reward" in that case.

These schools already lower their admission standards for many applicants. I really don't care if they lower them for ALL of them ... and I don't care if people figure out how to game the system to get admitted to these schools, either.

Look at the details of some of these stories. One actress paid $500,000 to get her daughter into a school where the cost of a four-year degree would have been almost $300,000. These people are morons. I would pay a bribe of two cents to get into a school at that cost.

That could be a potential claim. I suspect they have no legal options here unless they first expel the students who were involved in this scheme. Their failure to do so is very telling, since it suggests that the students are legitimate, active members of the student body who probably should have been admitted on their merits in the first place.
