Rand Paul to oppose Trump's emergency declaration, giving resolution votes needed to pass

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky says he will back a resolution that blocks President Trump’s declaration of an emergency at the southern U.S. border, giving it the votes needed to pass but not enough to turn back a presidential veto.

Mr. Paul, a Republican, announced his decision during a Saturday speech at Western Kentucky University, according to the Bowling Green Daily News.

“I can’t vote to give the president the power to spend money that hasn’t been appropriated by Congress,” Mr. Paul said. “We may want more money for border security, but Congress didn’t authorize it. If we take away those checks and balances, it’s a dangerous thing.”

Rand Paul is generally one of the good guys, but on this matter he is a useful idiot.

There is an emergency. Funds are already allocated. The President was given discretion over certain spending out of money that is allocated. Not too hard to understand. And not unconstitutional. Besides the matter of the president’s primary job being to protect the nation from enemies foreign AND domestic (that would include ALL Democrat legislators).

Rand is an open borders libertarian.

I'm sure the Cato Institute and its open borders, big money donors are proud of him.

It was okay when previous Presidents did it.

I don’t understand this.

If the President has a right to veto this resolution, why is Rand Paul or any Congressman complaining?

Seems to me the Constitution allows Trump to veto — he is under the law.

Furthermore, Trump is following the full intent of the Law — to protect our country from invasion and illegal entry. In that case, Congress is violating the spirit of the Constitution.

What do FReeper say to my logic?

“Where was he during the Iran payoff?”

I sure don’t remember Rand Paul or any other Repub saying anything when Ovomit greased the palms of the Iranian Mullah’s.

This makes great sense to me, Kalamata. Seems like we have too many legal beagle Senators, and not enough prudent Statesmen.

I don’t think Rand Paul can be trusted with Higher Office.

He lacks what the Founding Fathers had... Common Sense.

Rand, if you had a better fence around your property you’d never have been broken rib blindsided by your neighbor.

Beautiful, Aquila... The Obama highway robbery of the
Treasury was never mention.

And where’s outrage over $2 billion lost during Clinton’s term as Secretary of State?

All these Senators are liars — liars every one of them, to the depths of their souls.

Rand should give his neighbor the keys to his house so they can come in unannounced any time they feel like it.

Rand loves his neighbors!

I agree.

The majority of Rats simply don’t care about the security of our nation when it comes to illegal immigration, they want open borders for more votes whether they’re legal votes or not.

In Paul’s case he tries to stand on Constitutional principle but ignores not only the legal emergency declaration by POTUS but the fact that this truly is an emergency that is and will effect our nations survival.

Let’s look at prisons for a minute. Walls, razor wire, bars; all prisons are loaded with walls of many kinds.

When prisoners escape, it’s not usually a wall failure, altho an improperly built wall can and has on rare occasions, been a problem.

We are not a prison, and aren’t looking to keep people in. We need to keep them out.

All houses have walls and they aren’t JUST for climate control.

Some yards have walls...for saftey of course.

Anyone who says walls don’t work, should be forced to live on a sidewalk for 5 years with no pardon. Lets see how fast that person acquires a tent, and a lock box for valuables.

And let’s see how fast that lockbox gets stolen.

Demonrats really do need a dose of reality.

Don’t want a wall? How about some major welfare reform that puts American citizens, especially our injured servicemen, ahead of illegal immigrants and denies illegals anything other than short term emergency assistance? Take away the freebies and you remove the incentive for those supporting welfare and socialism as a means of making a living.

if I were the POTUS, I would invite Mr Paul into my office to meet the folks who have lost loved ones to the illegals.

Some people are emotional Libertarians before they are Constitutionalists. Many Libertarians have an anarchist streak that tempts them to oppose any national power at all, even to protect the country from invasion, which is the President's duty. Rand would throw out the Constitution with the bathwater.

Just posturing at this point. Let’s see who ponies up to override Trump’s veto, that’s where the consequences lie.

No, this vote will like give SCOTUS the legal justification to override the emergency. Budgets are not a 100% clear signal, as there is a lot of horse trading and pork involved, as well as the threat of another govt shut down. This measure is a very clear signal, very specific from the legislative branch that they do not authorize this specific funding.

Paul may be constitutionally right, but this is like refusing to shoot an intruder because "murder is wrong", only to stand by watch that intruder slaughter your family.

The Constitution is not a suicide pact
